Same experiance here.
I saw the add for it Way back in PC gamer, though "this would be fun if I had money, and was online."
Then I went hunting for it based on a screen shot and the box art, could not remember for the life of me what it was called.
Found it on underdogs, third place I looked

I happened upon a player's website, that mentioned the review of Allegiance as the best game that no one played. I realized quickly (from the reading and forums) that this would be a long-term commitment, so I thought about it for a month or so, then downloaded.

Stumbled around on gamespot, found the "Microsoft Pledges Allegiance to its Fanbase" article, went to MS' Research site and tried to download the source code (!), before stumbling on here and finding the actual game quite a bit smaller.

MPOGD or something similar. Took some finding too... a travesty IMO! /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
Best six months I ever spent searching for anything...

Same as Baker. I was actually looking for a space flight sim with an economy...something like Privateer.

Slashdot article on the Source release, same as Gappy (an article which no longer seems to exist on the Slashdot website, as far as I can tell). Downloaded the source, tried to get it to build, failed miserably, tooled around with it, checked the link in the
associated page on the Microsoft site and discovered this community (we're still linked directly, incidentally, just FYI). Started playing the game while I tinkered with the source. Stopped tinkering after a while and unfortunately haven't been able to get back to it.
Interesting side note -- MS released source for
MechCommander 2 later, and
FreeSpace 2 source is now available as well if anyone feels like making a Freespace/Allegiance hybrid. /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />
