Any one can make a Zip gun. And illegal guns are everywhere.Speculate until you are blue in the face, taking guns from ordinary citizens just gives more power to the thugs. You need to come over here and live in a big city. The cops can't protect you from desperate rouges. (Chavs for the Brits)

Meh.

Australia did a massive gun buyback. They are doing fine. How many zip guns have you actually seen? Control the sale of ammunition, as well as guns, and the thugs won't have the .22 bullets either. Also the .22 zipgun is quite unlikely to actually kill you, a knife even less so.

But keep believing guns aren't the problem. It's you who needs to live there with them, no me.

In the big city, I'm terrified of the police, and slightly afraid of lowlife-criminal-types.
Outside of the big city, I'm just afraid of the police.
I get no comfort in knowing the police exist, and are armed - quite the opposite.
We should wipe out 99% of the police force country-wide, and start requiring cops to be genius-level, and pay them however much they want.
It's ridiculous that we throw any @#(!head moron into the police academy for a short time, then start paying him to carry a gun and make life-or-death decisions for people on-the-fly.

You live in Finland. Try living in New York for 2 months...

And yes, you don't need brains to be a cop, just a relative in the business.

Take away their guns...the state will keep them safe!

What do you require btw? Here it's high school diploma and no criminal record, I think.

I figure a high school diploma, a fitness test, a psych eval, and it varies by state/PD what is allowable on your criminal record.

Maybe it's not that rotten eggs are accepted as police, but that the oversight of them is too lax, and their attitude towards the public is poor.

I mean, so it's not about the people who get in, but what the system and police culture turns them into.

It's both.
People who like to push people around, like to be cops. The psych eval doesn't weed these types out.
and the cops who aren't like that, either become *#$@s eventually, or get fired.

We need to be really ridiculously anal about the stuff, to a level that maybe wouldn't even work in an environment where a significant part of the population is carrying concealable weapons.

Basically, any time the cops use a fire-arm, they have to do a full report on it. If it's not justifiable, they get in a lot of trouble. They get fired quite easily. I'm not 100% happy with the police over here either, but they are mostly ok, and they are kept on a short leash. UK does it better than we do. I really like the system where the bobby on the beat wears a knife west and doesn't carry a gun. If somebody starts messing with the UK police with firearms, an armed response unit takes it from there.

Here all the guys walking a beat carry a glock in a tactical holster. It really ticks me off, and it also makes them very nervous about getting their hands dirty and getting involved in a fight (I've worked in security, so I've had encounter this many times) as they are worried about somebody grabbing their gun off their belts.

When you're patrolling a city street in Finland, leave the damn gun. Be approachable.
