is considered the biggest tragedy since 9/11, whereas the explosion in Texas that killed closer to 100 people is not such a big deal.
The reality is, nobody cares that $#@!ing much about anyone actually dying, unless the TV tells you to feel that way.
The TV says hate Russians because half a dozen people died - and so it shall be.

For most people, It's more about American Pride than anything else.

industrial accidents that kill tons of people, not a big deal

bombings that can be branded acts of terrorism and then used to fuel a xenophobic narrative, huge deal

Also industrial accidents are not uncommon. The Texas explosion is obviously horrible but it's small scale compared to the BP oil leak for example. Whereas the US has suffered from very little terrorism so any incident, no matter how big or small, is big news because of novelty.

If you have the misfortune to suffer a decade or two of regular car bombs and exploding shopping centres you'd be amazed at how quickly it'll stop being a big deal.

Except knife wielding man could have been stopped by any number of panicked on lookers fairly easily.

And I feel like this is the wrong thread for that discussion.

Now consider if the perp had used a gun instead of a knife.
