The PM of the UK is the leader of the government. The government is usually the largest party by number of MPs following a general election. Therefore when a PM who is a party leader resigns it's an internal party matter to select a new leader who then becomes PM by default.
So "Britain Trump" as literally nobody is calling him was elected by the Conservative Party membership (approx. 0.05% of the population) not the country.
Give it time though, I'm sure we can manage to $#@! up even more a nation between now and the end of October.
