Backstory to videogames is no more interesting than backstories to a porno.
But lots of people
like their porno to have stories. I actually think this is a great analogy. Some people like porn, plain and simple, and the story just gets in the way or, at best, sets up the flimsy excuse that's needed for two (or more

) people to... do stuff. But lots of people
prefer erotica, and
want the story to be good -- they're still looking for the sexy stuff in it, but to them it's a lot more exciting if there's a
good reason for the people involved to be having sex, if the emotions and relationships involved are explained, if the back-story is filled in and the setting is an engaging one, and if the characters are at least a little deep (

) and interesting.
I personally think a balanced diet of both is good; a quick "porn-style" game can be a much-needed burst (

) of fun when you don't want to spend a lot of time or thought on it. But most of my truly
favourite games are more like "erotica" in this metaphor.

Allegiance is more porn than erotica, I suppose (though obviously it's very deep (

) in other ways), but it does have a bit of a back-story (

), and making it something more in-between (

) can be a good way to bring in more players with diverse tastes and preferences (

).
P.S. Did I miss any?

As Duckie did to me I shall do to you and I hope you keep the tradition alive for the next person to emerge from the rabble and make a mark
You suck Bacon, your ideas suck, and and and even your choice of fonts suck. Don't change anything cause well it just sucks.
Suck it

If you use the other vid, Bacon, use the one that at least gives credit where due.
M$ didn't make the video.

Hey bacon, idiot, I'm not dissing the concept, I fully support the concept, and I like the content you're putting in there, what I AM dissing is your ability to web design your way out of a wet paper bag.
Leave it to the professionals (and SpaceJunk's design looks VERY good, clean and professional).
@Bacon & TE, I'm sorry if you can't take criticism.

It really depends on how much the game has to do with story. The only time I care about storyline in a game is when I'm involved in it. Backstory makes it all the more interesting . . . but Allegiance isn't exactly full of dark spawn.

I've always liked the Allegiance backstory. Things need a context.

Reading through the comments (by people who have been sucked into the game and stick with it today), there seems to be two camps: 1) those that like a background story (even if the video for it is "light" in the quality department) and 2) those who are don't care about that but are enamored by the in-game action shots/video.
This indicates to me that among our player base, BOTH approaches are appropriate messages to be used to recruit more folks. (To borrow from another marketing campaign, some prefer "Great Taste" and some prefer "Less Filling". Either way, they're still drinking the same beer regardless of their personal reasons.)
So let's use both video types on the main page. This also shows a certain additional depth that may help "push them over the edge" into downloading the game and trying it for themselves.
