Backstory to videogames is no more interesting than backstories to a porno.
But lots of people
like their porno to have stories. I actually think this is a great analogy. Some people like porn, plain and simple, and the story just gets in the way or, at best, sets up the flimsy excuse that's needed for two (or more

) people to... do stuff. But lots of people
prefer erotica, and
want the story to be good -- they're still looking for the sexy stuff in it, but to them it's a lot more exciting if there's a
good reason for the people involved to be having sex, if the emotions and relationships involved are explained, if the back-story is filled in and the setting is an engaging one, and if the characters are at least a little deep (

) and interesting.
I personally think a balanced diet of both is good; a quick "porn-style" game can be a much-needed burst (

) of fun when you don't want to spend a lot of time or thought on it. But most of my truly
favourite games are more like "erotica" in this metaphor.

Allegiance is more porn than erotica, I suppose (though obviously it's very deep (

) in other ways), but it does have a bit of a back-story (

), and making it something more in-between (

) can be a good way to bring in more players with diverse tastes and preferences (

).
P.S. Did I miss any?
