I use xubuntu with xfce on my work lappy and we use ubuntu server in our environment.
Ubuntu server on my nuc at home and raspbian on my pi that i use for spotify.
Distros tried and disregarded: slackware 3.0 to, uuh, 8, gentoo, debian, suse, ubuntu desktop, mint, fedora and hanna montana linux.

I very highly recommend Ubuntu MATE. Give it a shot, you wont regret it.

The os itself isn't bad

Ever heard of arch Linux?
They provide only a CL installer and it takes hours to install.
The arch community thinks they are the 1337 community inside the Linux world.
Personally i'm running manjaro, an arch based distro.

Yeah, Arch basically accepts the "ricers" that couldn't install Gentoo. And I thank them for it.
