Trying to get onto Steam or another similar platform (the windows store might be a much easier sell) is a much better idea and with increased visibility the selling point has to be the price and the gameplay. People might expect better graphics but I don't think that they can be offered at any point in the near future.

The engine is the foundation. The art is secondary. BS is correct we need full copyright to everything.

I have a copy of the original install. But it had crash problems. That's why MS pushed an update to install Crashguard.

After they turned it over to the community one of the first fixes seemed to cure the crash issue (if memory serves me correctly it was around 2003).

After the the big split, the next update seemed to now include the crash problem. I could be wrong about some of this, but I'm taking this from memory.
I don't know the backround of KGJV and Xenoteck's involvement with the code.

Also, here a snippet about what we were discussing on Mumble

Is this not almost the exact same as Allegiance? The only things really missing are Alephs and the beautiful build spheres.

and +1 to everything death said.
This is my number one concern. But getting through to someone with clout will be like pulling teeth.

I was referring to the crashing related, to too many high res textures beign loaded into memory.

Hey can we fix LAN compatibility while we're at it? I'd really like to run this core but the only thing that's stopping me is the three dozen hoops I have to jump through to get a beta server up, and even then I can't create a game because of a dozen other hoops that don't make any sense to me because I have never put my hands in install files, etc. to look at how registry paths are created.

go kickstarter
get some money to recrut a good lawyer (or law firm)
get the lawyer to establish a non profit organisation and deal with MS for the Allegiance IP and other legal stuff.
If it succeed and only then: recrut a couple devs to fix bugs, kb map, do an installer and steam integration and lobby/game servers hosting/admins/management/whatever.
Relaunch the game on Steam.

If enough people starting playing the game again, then and only then you can start thinking about rebuilding the game or porting it to a new engine.

I may be wrong, but FAO is a non profit organization=?
The things KGJV entailed, should be our goal for this year and the next.

If we are to get a law firm involved, we should run through the costs to hiring and then start heavy fundraising with the community and perhaps Kickstarter-type-thing. (paired with a Reddit post for some extra attention)

Edit: Just popped a message off to a fellow on Reddit who may be able to offer some help. Will update as anything relevant comes up.
