(for most people) their latency isn't much of an issue, as long as its consistent.
It's the spiking and crashing that makes things really bad, and it doesn't seem to be exclusive to any server, since it's most likely due to bugs in the game code since we've been having revisions.

Latency varies greatly in the same region, need to make sure you get in a datacenter with good connectivity. Plenty of UK hosts don't have good connectivity to USA just as many north east US hosts do not have good connectivity to Europe.
_xJammer_ wrote:QUOTE (_xJammer_ @ Oct 18 2013, 06:16 AM) As for the best option, it will depend on (again) where players are playing from. Given that the US generally has a good internet connection across the land (while EU has some serious issues with several countries) it would make sense to have the server on the EU side of the fibre (just move Mach to whatever the best datacentre there is).
This has not been my experience. For servers I host in another game, EU players have decent latency to north east USA datacenters and US players have decent latency to UK datacenters. I feel north east USA is better because west USA will have bad connection to a UK datacenter where as generally only those in far east Europe will have a bad connection to north east USA datacenter. Generally a large majority of EU players are from west Europe and west US players greatly outnumber those in east Europe. The fact that we have mach in EU already makes it more helpful to add a server in north east USA (still under the assumption that CSS is unplayable due to spiking and mach is a bit more stable).

Yes, I am trying to figure out if it is code related. But I hear far more complaints regarding CSS spiking where as I mostly get complaints of high ping to mach from US players. Do others also agree that spiking does not seem to be exclusive to any server? If so not much point in wasting time/money on a new server.

You mostly get complaints of high pings to mach from US players, because Mach is the only actively administered game server with current cores, so Mach is the server that is played.

I live near Toronto and for years my connection has been good/great on the servers. Over the past year I have had a slight increase in crashing and for me not a huge deal. What I have noticed is other players seem to crash more often and I see larger numbers of a bunch of players all crashing at the same time or the server itself crashes.

yeah, Toronto was great for me too when I lived there. 120ms max. but then that is not too surprising, considering it's the centre of the universe and all...

I've recently 14 months or so, had a lot of trouble on Mach, effectively making Mach a useless piece of crap 99% of the time.

Even though my overall ISP is delivering much better performance than in the past.

Other servers are nice.

Toronto (Stripe) was always very nice.

5 people (Calgary, Edmonton, and Regina) I know won't play because the servers are horrible for them.

I won't often play on Mach because it is such utter crap.

Not sure what went wrong with Mach, it was in the past 'meh' with 160-180ms, no spikes, now it's often 300-400ms with massive spikes, sometimes it's almost tolerable at 180-240ms with occasional spikes.

Earlier on allegiance: "You have 80 ping, i have 120... let's go to planet where i have 120 and you have 300ms (+ mandatory lagspikes). "
Planet not getting updated is main reasin why 100% of the euros and 50% of the norht americans are happy with servers.
