I guess if you keep documents on the drive then it might ware down faster. I've just put some documents on mine, but I've got all the stuff I work on in a dropbox to keep a backup in the cloud :) - If the drive dies I won't have lost anything.

I'm using the free dropbox but you can get more space for free in various ways like:
* (At the moment) if you use a beta build from the forums you can get an extra 5GB of space free by uploading photos and video from a camera: http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php...amp;replies=121
* More space for academic users https://www.dropbox.com/edu

SSD reliability is actually pretty decent in my experience, I have a bunch of them in use at work, and not a single failure in a couple of years. I'm actually surprised it crapped out.

The write-cycle thing is a red herring. In heavy use it still lasts 5+ years and you can tell when it's failing - free space begins to diminish.

Now that you mention it, the core was not actually on the SSD :D but allegiance source was :( My documents & code are backed up a lot more frequently, but the source was not under that folder structure (doh!)

Well drunk driving has been pretty reliable in my experience. Not a single failure in a couple years.

But when it finally came it was quite a setback.

I've got an OCZ Vertex as well, but I use it exclusively for the OS install. Everything else is on regular old platter drives =) Now I'm scared my OS drive is gonna crash, though =/

Still waiting a few years to get an SSD. Or until I'm rich enough that I don't care about the money. Even then I won't rely on it much. Thankfully, Linux is very flexible and I should be able to keep the SSD alive with it for a very long time. Newer filesystems have SSD-specific options and you can control exactly what mountpoints you put on it.

All I mean by decent reliability is that they are no worse than HDs (and industry data bears this too based on a report I've seen). You can't trust single anything, HD or SSD. Even RAID 1 mirroring is marginally safer - there a zillion reasons why the filesystem could crap out without HD/SSD failure, and the borked FS will just be mirrored onto the second drive.

Good backups are key.

Of course, Linux is fast without an SSD ;) .
