We have to hope this encourages more investment in alternative fuel sources and energy conservation. Trying to solve the environmental chrysis with nuclear power was always a doomed idea. If for nothing else, then because that is only an optio for wealthy developed nations. We need distributed power generation, and options that are implementable on the small scale in less developed countries. This is a global issue, and keeping the lights on in the West isn't enough.

What I can't figure out is this:

That's right. Our Nuclear Reactors are GLORIFIED TEA KETTLES.

There's *got* to be a more efficient way of converting that @#(! into electricity...

Isn't nuclear power one of the alternatives to fossil? Seems like what we need is a more reliable way to completely drain this fuel. Stuff is still flying off of it, killing other stuff, so it's got potential. Just need to herd those neutron cats into a propeller that will blow the kite into the marble on top of the plumbing works so it knocks the hammer to hit the diving board, dumping the man into the bucket to drop the net onto the mouse.

And we all know those developing countries could use less mice. So it's win for all!

Nuclear does have potential, but it's way too risky the way it's being used. Finland is the only country that has it's act together with the responsible burial of the waste too.

We tend to be so slow and methodical that it's astonishing that it's happening first here. What is the rest of the world doing?
