I like it and hate it at the same time...
Any way, can you list the names that are in conflict?
I see you haven't considered some semi-traditional sector names. Solar system planets for example... (they show up in the training missions) the major asteroids could be cool too as well as the newly discovered planets beyond Pluto.
In any case, this could be cool for new maps.
ZOMG!
Brilliant idea!
You don't have to eliminate names, just make sure that maps don't use ones which are conflicting?
Wait... am I just reinventing you idea? I'm too tired to be sure.
Gnight.

here.

Well, I am not sure how naming the sectors in non-custom maps works... So far, it would seem to be the case of them being specified for each map separately, only randomized each time the map is loaded in game (or at least I think that the name distribution for example on hihigher isn't always the same).
But yeah no matter how you slice it, the basic idea is still the same:
Making sure that each sector on every map starts with different two letters. The namelist I provided is just one way of ensuring that, as all the names listed there have different first two letters. The other way to do it, as you said, would be to make sure that maps use the current namelist, but have only non-conflicting sector-names.

the good way to do this is to change the code so that the sector names list isn't hard-coded anymore but loaded from a textfile in server artwork.
this way every server admin could choose which names they want to use and change them without requiring a new server build.
this is an easy fix to do ...
so someone should post it in allegtrack...
edit: we can even have a different names list for each core, giving a 'flavor' or theme to the names based on the core.
edit: actually the list should be stored in the core, even more easy to do.

Just wondering, since you got so into it, shall I still post it into said AllegTrack, or has it already been taken care of?
