Yo guys - there is already a Captcha in registration for This forum.
The problem appears to be that G
oogles Recaptcha has been hacked recently.
As I said
in the recent News post
notjarvis wrote:QUOTE (notjarvis @ Jan 12 2011, 10:01 PM) Our forum has become the target of a great number of spambots which apparently
can get through Google's Recaptcha authentication. The forum Moderators attempt to delete the spam threads and block the accounts as fast as possible, but there are a great number. If anyone knows easy to implement and free ways to stop this and has experience in IPB forums - please get in touch with TE (free and easy, as it would be pointless to spend an immense amount of time changing forums that are due to be upgraded).
There has been a large increase, The Mods have deleted a very large number before anyone even notices them - its just at the weekend a few more have got through as we are less likely to be near a PC (I know that's true in my case)

It's an gmail address the spammers seem to use at registration. I know from other forum software you can block certain email providers during the registration process.
QUOTE A recent update to Xrumer spam software, used to target forums, blogs, and email forms, has coincided with the recent surge, reinforcing suggestions that Google’s reCaptcha system has been hacked.
While Google appear to deny that reCaptcha has been hacked, Gmail accounts are routinely created through automated means by Xrumer software and used to validate registration of spam users to forums.[/quote]

You can block spam bots by username, email address or IP address (
see database). But some people don't want to modify the forum to stop the spam...

How much effort would it be to add extra steps to any new account that puts their username as their squad name? Notice all the bots put down their name as their squad...
