autoupdate.alleg.net gives 'Directory Listing Denied'
that registry key was set correctly
firewall and AV turned off
Still not working
Won't see MOTD
Beta mode should work, too, but let's stick to the regular servers for now.
I've never known a firewall or AV program to block the MotD, but I suppose it's possible. (They usually just stop Alleg from reaching the game server.) One thing to note, though, is that merely turning off a firewall or AV doesn't keep them from blocking you. There's almost always something still resident that is still active and blocking access. Windows firewall isn't normally an issue. I'd first look at AVG.
Is your version of AVG the one that included the firewall component? (I get the various products mixed up.) Try uninstalling AVG. Reboot, then try connecting. All good? If so, try re-installing AVG *without* the firewall component (it's an option available at install time only).
... and that assumes I've got the right product.

No, this AVG doesn't include a firewall afaik.
(This AVG also has no way to turn it off completely besides uninstalling, though I do think I turned off its scanning).
No chance this has to do with port forwarding sort of stuff? I know this was an issue back in the days, but apparently we no longer have to forward anything?

No, no port forwarding is required. If you have set up something in the router, best to clear that stuff out. It *could* be interfering.
With regards to Beta mode, you must first enter beta mode in ASGS, then select "Update/Repair critical files". This will push the correct version to your machine. When finished with the beta, turn off beta mode, the "Update/Repair critical files" to restore your client back to R5.
