Ohhhh, "Probe me"

Saw title of thread, had to make this joke.

having a marker for a sector(s) is interesting. Not sure how hard it would be to get it done. Propose a decent doable idea and it might get done sometime ;)

This.

Not entirely opposed to the idea..but the term "probe-whore" isn't heard often anymore because it is a dying breed. The whole "name in lights" disease. With an idea like Grav's (who does a good job of letting pilots know what he wants them to do) it would be one of those things that a portion of pilots would appreciate, and all the others would whine about. But then again, that pretty much sums up anything around here... :P

"their base built over here", slap a waypoint down
"gather here to spike the bomber", slap a waypoint down
"camp this aleph", slap a waypoint down
So what's wrong with the current waypoint setting for all this then?

I think its a great idea. Not only for asking probes, but also for generally flagging "important" sectors so that the team always has a visual reminder of where to be without the comm/team having to spam constantly. Also makes it more clear when more than one thing needs to be done instead of issuing one order/waypoint, and then issuing the second order/waypoint and everyone forgetting about the first one.

I think a more involved version could cover many of the same goals the earlier proposed "whiteboard" ideas had without having to worry about people drawing penises.

I really like the idea of it knowing when someone drops a probe in the sector. On a related note, perhaps number of friendly probes (and enemy probes spotted) could be added to the extra info tab on F7 for pilots to make assessments on the fly?

And yes, I'm being sarcastic.
Jimen i've never seen you command a game in prime time so why do you even think we care about your opinion of what the comm should do?

For me the biggest problem with them is that they're overwritten by the next wp you make. A permanent marker (be it for probes or for juckto's list) would be nice to have.

Well if you could use a permanent marker and give it a name (with an order, for example) would be awesome, but that's too much i think.

Hell, orders sent by the comm are overwritten the next time someone spams "attack my target!"

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.

Yep. We should keep older orders, then you can reject more orders and the one before that will be shown.

Still won't solve the full issue (but would be a nice minor enhancement IMO) I was planning to do that soon

If someone wants to raise a case for the Highlighting sectors thingie - please do so.

Being able to highlight a sector on the minimap for your team (say by ringing it in white, which'd alternate with the red if combat ensues too) would be GREAT for the team.

It would be ESPECIALLY helpful for those without much situational awareness when you need to start a run fast.

Instead of "We're bombing Sri Metsa -- Assemble in TittyBaby!"

The commander can just say "Bombing from flashpoint!" and everyone, vet, voob, or n00b knows right where to go instantly without having to mouse over sectors or ask in chat or whatever it is that voobs and new players do that takes them so long to get to the bomber with a nan.

If it's alt-clicking a sector on the minimap, it's FAR faster than setting a waypoint and as said above, and it also prevents that whole "next order overwrites" thing which happens when the comm uses orders instead.

Bumping this, created a ticket http://trac.alleg.net/ticket/208.

I have added a probe count to the minimap to help commanders keep track of if their team is probing. However I like this idea for more reasons than just probing. Bomb run virk to titty work better if those sectors can be highlighted so ppl don't have to highlight every sector to find the sectors in question.
