Since Duke seem to be the problem... I can say i dont have the problem.
I have both, the new Warpcore and the Dukechat.
So its not the Dukechat... !?!?
If its a bad Sounddef.mdl then its because apoch added a new sound to his core file that is is not listed as a game sound.
Game sounds are those that are tricked by ingame action's(gat sound, sectoroverload.... etc)
Apoch have you added a Duke VC soundfile to the warpcore or added another new sound to the core??

The easiest fix seems to be reinstalling whatever chatpack you use, replacing the sounddef.mdl.

Yes.
To test this i did the following:
I made a clean install. Overwrote the sounddef.mdl and the quickchat.mdl with my DNVC backup.
I also deleted the filelist to grab that last update.
I launced the game, no problem.
The game is now grabbing the updates. I play. and quit.
Later i when i login, Alleg Crash on launch.
So i check my files in artwork sorting on modified date.
The sounddef.mdl is not with quickchat.mdl. sounddef.mdl is an old version.
I overwrite the sounddef.mdl with my backup, and i can play again.
There must/could be a sounddef.mdl in the AU that overwrite.
