google for blender3d. you can use that to create models with.

Once you have finished all your modeling and skinning we can then do the converting.

blender is all free, and once you know how to use it, is probably one of the best all around free modeling programs out there

Unforunately I don't know that there's a easy path to create .mdls from blender. I know the original tools make .mdls out of .x files, and I was working on tying everything together to make an exporter. But I was having some trouble creating test models I knew worked.

Actually, if anyone could provide me with some blender models that were either successfully imported from milkshape, or exported to milkshape and then made into mdls, that'd be a huge help.

I can get basic geometry exporting, but I need more information on how animation bones are used to define mount points and things like lights.

do you know how to use them?
if so, can you post here:

it would help me a lot,
all my models are done in 3ds max, and i can export .x files (this would save me pestering people who have milkshape)

Thanks Barricuda that modeler is alot easier to understand.. one question is there a way to insert the joints? i guess thats what they are called the little boxes. or would i need to yoink a shape from another basic model?

also how do you make the gun and wire detail you made? i'm actually thinking i want my stuff more like stealths how the weapons are internal and come out after they are needed but a just if decide to change it.

anyway off to add more ideas
to my thread.... its becomeing more or a list of things i wanna try then a actual thread

The models are static, you can't have parts that move.

but alleg does have joints

and the .x (and i think .mdl) format does support animation, and indeed some alleg ships do have animation, but its not used in game
