You know, we could change the names, I must admit its kinda odd when you see Ten4 as "Veteran".
But its a fact that the ranking system never worked as it was supposed to, also, the playerbase is so small, that actually it isnt a rocket science to figure out who are the true newbies.
So all in all, despite some minor changes, I honestly dont see a BIG reason to worry with ranks, not to discuss about a system do determine them.
Also just as tip, you could bring some more "hard to achieve accomplisments" and use them to define a "rank" for players.

Currently, we are ranking players by values unrelated to what we want to know about them. Do you want to know if they can command?...or if they can whore up?..or if they've got a lot of game time under their belt?

I agree Wasp we could split it down into Commanding and Flying. You can't really get any more useful values with Elo.
I'd still show the flying rank by default and the command rank replaces it, if someone actually IS a commander. That can then be used to improve the team balance evaluation.

I don't see the need to know their command ranks because if they're sitting in the command seat, i can see clearly who they are and because there is so few commanders, you can't help but know what abilities they have. Balancing commanders is already easy to do, why rank them?
What I want to know is; if the hider on my team will, most often, scout, int whore or bomb...and what rank they are in those categories.

Or you could, you know... just ask them what they plan to do.

how about 2 numbers..... (1) (15) one for points in game, and one for allegskill
that should make most people happy..... the first to go up to 99? like an RPG exp based game, and the 2nd number to be based on if they are worth a fark or not.
could be out of the range of coding, but i'm clueless other than having an opinion.......
hell, why stop there if its possible to have two ranks show on the lobby..... might as well make a command win RPG style also

Some extra player information would be well placed in a in-game player profile page.
It could have:
date first seen / time played total score / associated level / score per minute total miners killed / miners killed per minute base kills / base kills per minute total player kills / players killed per minute K/D ratio as int/fig/sf/.. and so on.
Could be great for motivation/comparison.
However I don't think it would really help creating balanced teams. Also there isn't enough space to cram in over a dozen numbers on the player list.
