Probably most of that 40% did not know what to do when the google search page did not come up. Based on my years of IT experience, I break that down as follows:

1) 30% of the above think "google" and "internet" are synonyms, so when google went down, the internet was broken

2) 30% probably have google set to their home page and figured that when an error message came up, their internet was down (5% of those people probably called their ISP to complain)

3) 30% probably realize that google is just a search engine, but haven't used another search engine in so long that they did not know where else to go to search the internet

4) 10% just kept rebooting their computer until google came back up

Basicly that means 55% is voobporn and 5% are nazi webshops.

In addition to TA's list i think that
60% of all admins typed "google is not working" into google but failed to do so.
20% of all admins realized that google is down and told their users to do reboots until google is back up
20% of all admins tried to search the phone number of their isp - using google.
I have a johnson photo in my profile since 2010.

"20% of all admins realized that google is down and told their users to do reboots until google is back up" sounds like a BOFH move.

It was down for a grand total of five minutes. Also, it implies only GoSquared sites/tracked sites in the data. Don't know how widespread they are, but they're not everywhere. They're not going to catch 100% of the traffic. Not saying that Google going down (Hey, has to have fun sometime) didn't have a significant impact on the web, but 40% of global traffic? Probably not.
