Prop 8 Oral Arguments
US is doing it too.

Don't find fault, find a remedy; anybody can complain.

Better.Sheriff Metz wrote:QUOTE (Sheriff Metz @ Mar 27 2013, 09:21 PM) I mean marriage as far as it has been recognized by government in the United States, which is what pertains to what we are discussing.
Still not entirely relevant. Slavery had always been the law of the land, ntil it changed. Same with other things.
"This has always been so" isn't really much of an argument.

Problem is it is a good argument for many people.Adept wrote:QUOTE (Adept @ Mar 28 2013, 10:05 AM) "This has always been so" isn't really much of an argument.
Respect for tradition, and what is the accepted behaviour in society is deep seated and fundamental to some people's mindset. Just dismissing it as a "poor argument" ignores the fact that many people instinctively feel that respecting the way our ancestors did things is very important.
This doesn't make them evil or necessarily wrong, just coming from a different instinctive start point.
Tom Chivers talked about this in his usually pretty good column

marriage = religious institution
civil union = legally binding contract
The House of the Flying Burping Aardvark perform marriages that bind together whatever they think is the right combo of things under a morale code that they are certain is the one and true version. How this is done and how it is undone is not a big deal to me
The government of the appropriate geographic region recognizes a contract between two people. This contract gives them rights, and legal obligations. How this is done and undone is not a big deal to me
The sticky bit is when you mix the two together and the resulting noise is what you have now.
Everyone can get a civil union over the age of consent, * insert name of religious organization here * choose who can be married. One is legally binding the other is binding to the church's code
*shrug* How much easier can it be?
You want to change the morale codes of your favorite religion by all means have at it. I'll sit back and watch with interest and wonder why the hell you'd want to belong to an institution that requires you to fight to make them accept you.... but that is just me
Slavery, Nazis, and "separate but equal" doesn't apply here.
Ssssh
Take away the churches power to grant a legally binding union and require people to (additionally) sign up in front of a judge? I wouldn't mind. You can always invite the judge to the wedding to combine the two.

This whole thing is in no way indicative of some significant victory towards equal treatment for all and human rights. It's just some crap a bunch of bleeding heart straight women are blindly campaigning for because they feel bad for gays. Plenty of gays are opposed to prop 8, and I've spoken to them about it in detail. Trying to shove gays into the marriage mold is absolutely ludicrous. Not to mention there are a dozen or so other sexual orientations (that I don't even know what they mean) that prop 8 doesn't address. It's nothing to do with equality. It has everything to do with... some bleeding hearts happen to feel bad for the gay community, right now. and gay marriage will just make them feel better about themselves.
as for the pansexuals
transsexuals
non-binaries
and the other like 8 orientations I don't understand
The bleeding hearts don't care about you this week. Sorry. Make them feel bad for you and then you can have whatever you want.
also, my goal in life is to have a gay marriage with Neil Patrick Harris
