In fact, the ideal Elite IV would probably have Braben come up with the engine, the universe, the ships and the flight model and then have Roberts work it all up into something that could be sold to normal people (as opposed to the likes of us).
Also Roberts should be congratulated for being one of the few people to try and keep that genre alive, yes Freelancer was crap but at least he gave it a go, or rather came up with an original idea which was then trashed by the accountants in favour of yet more formulaic @#(!e that is of interest to noone except those people who play fps and want to do so endlessly whilst cocking a snoop at anyone with a brain.
Finally Roberts should be congratulated for Starlancer.

This is totally gonna hit 5.5 million, where they're gonna add the "Bengal Carrier" as the biggest flyable ship in the game. I doubt it'll hit 6 million, but he's promising a full orchestrated score + 100 total star systems on launch if it hits 6.
In response to "procedural = better" argument, can I just say.... mmmm, no?
Procedural is cool if you wanna create a huge universe with slightly different things in each sector... but if you want actual, interesting, unique locations, hand-crafted is the only way to go. There's a reason Bethesda didn't procedurally generate Skyrim like they did Oblivion. Oblivion's world was boring and bland because it was generated by an algorithm. Skyrim is fascinating and gives you this feeling of "I wonder what's over there" because people sat down and made it. Once again I'm way, WAY more interested in Star Citizen than a procedurally generated galaxy full of the same boring @#(!, just organized differently by a computer.
Procedural may be more interesting from a programming standpoint, but we're not playing the code. We're playing the game the code creates...

I tried the X3: Terran Conflict. Gave it a good 2 hours, and I just couldn't get into it. Everything felt like a chore, and the single player plot was entirely uninteresting. Maybe I should give them another chance, but IDK. Just didn't grab me. I do have the latest one I got on a Steam sale for like $2.50. Maybe I'll try that one while I impatiently wait for Star Citizen.

See Braben doesn't use procedural generation to create new content, he uses it to make more from less. I don't think you understand the grand scale when I say Frontier had a fairly realistic model of The Milky Way. Anyway im not saying its better then handcrafted but your going to get more content which might look like a mess or it might mean gorgeous environments created.
I do love Roberts work, Starlancer is still one of my favourite games.
I'm glad Star Citizen is hapening and got a ton of funding, but honestly I'm more keen to see E:D.
