Although I'm new, etc, isn't *ping* more or less equal to seconds from last refresh from server? When it is growing there is only client side state and no fresh reference to server state, meaning he's flying in alternate universe for over a minute at a time. Unlikely playable.

I'm situated only 80km away from the server and I've also had very infrequent problems with it. Gameplay is very choppy for 1 or 2 secs and then it's back to normal. My lag is in the 20's. I even dplayed during 1 of those choppy episodes. However in 3 hours play time it only happened 4 times and this was in a period of 15 minutes. I would guess it was router problems/bandwidth problems at the provider. However when i had choppy gameplay noone else had a problem, so ..... Next time I'll try to tracert but since the problems only last a few secs this will be difficult to trace.

BTW EU Server Rocks

My experience on the EU server went down the drain today :

Code: Select all

Tracing route to 84.243.253.93 over a maximum of 30 hops

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.2.1
  2    15 ms    15 ms    14 ms  59.93.0.1
  3    50 ms    50 ms    50 ms  218.248.249.49
  4    49 ms    49 ms    50 ms  218.248.249.34
  5    48 ms    68 ms    49 ms  218.248.255.9

  7    85 ms    81 ms    79 ms  202.54.185.250
  8   311 ms   309 ms   311 ms  59.163.16.150.static.vsnl.net.in [59.163.16.150]
  9   316 ms   316 ms   326 ms  ge-5-3-1.pr2.lga1.us.above.net [64.125.13.53]
 10   398 ms   406 ms   418 ms  so-7-0-0.mpr3.ams1.nl.above.net [64.125.27.186]
 11   336 ms   338 ms   337 ms  grafix.ams4.nl.above.net [82.98.253.68]
 12   675 ms   686 ms   690 ms  rtr-1.rtd-kub.grafix.nl [217.67.247.5]
 13   697 ms   693 ms   690 ms  84.243.253.93

Trace complete.
Notice hop 12 onwards where the ping doubles. Also notice how the idiots route me through the US. If I ping Alleg.net, I go through London to the US. WTF?

Also, if I ping www.grafix.nl directly, I get ~200 pings, which means I'm going straight to London and then to Amsterdam.

Stupid global routers.

Yeah, I think that is how it works as well. Which explains how the night I had 1017 lag (over 1 full second) on a US server (campus network was strictly examining all packets), but with relatively normal pings (5-7) was about as playable as the EU server yesterday at 80 lag and 20-40s pings. Watch alt f as you play next time, fly through an aleph and you'll see that "you" don't change sectors until your ping resets. You also notice that big jumps only occur when you have a large ping.

I'm not blaming the server for my poor performance yesterday, I noticed similar issues w/ pings when I went and sat in one of the FTX servers for a few minutes. I have a laptop and because my school network isn't always reliable (see above) I play on wifi in a lot of coffee shops, bookstores, etc, so I still often have local connection issues.

From my gf's house I had a very nice afternoon on EU a while back with again 80-90 lag

Goddamit EU servers rock /wub.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":iluv:" border="0" alt="wub.gif" /> Thanks guys! Steady (won't budge by 1 even) lag of 30... sweetness! Note: I had 90-100 lag on Noir's servers, a little over 100 on Thal and 120+ (more often ++) on Planet...
