I wouldn't suggest trying to find yourself on it, until you have done some boat exploration to map out some major landmarks near you.

playing it, having difficultys as per normal. I'll get my head around wth is going on soon though.

The most important thing to do as a new player is to get skills so you can start to forage and raid ant hills. After you have done that, pumping exploration up even higher is nice so you can get more curiosities until you start to understand the game to the point where you can do something industrious.

You can get the carpentry skill to make new clogs out of wood blocks.
Or you can hunt rabbits and use their dried fur to make bunny slippers (that wont be eaten by ants) with the clothmaking skill.

I suggest you invest in 20 exploration, for the sake of finding both curiosities and Wild Windblown Weeds. You can place those on drying racks, and they will dry over a 16 hour period into a random seed. Then you can start farming.
