Who are you to judge when one person's right is more important than another? I happen to agree with Metz, that these protests are just a huge waste of time. But I certainly wouldn't deny the protester's right to use that space, within reason.Jimen wrote:QUOTE (Jimen @ Nov 27 2011, 07:32 PM) MY RIGHT TO NOT BE MILDLY INCONVENIENCED BY OTHER PEOPLE'S RIGHT TO USE A SPACE I MIGHT SOMEDAY ACTUALLY PASS THROUGH. Except not really, because everybody knows that only hipsters and hippies actually visit parks.
The fact is that 90% of the population of the US has it pretty damn good, and that's why nobody is paying attention to these protests. Compared to what's happening in the middle east, this OWS nonsense is a joke.
In short, quit being a dirty hippie and just go vote.

The Arab Spring didn't happen because of human rights abuses, it happened because the economy went to hell. People will tolerate plenty of oppression as long it keeps the economy strong enough that everyone's got a job. It's not until a recession that the populace stops tolerating the bull@#(! and starts holding the politicians and leaders accountable. That's true in Egypt, and it's true in America. I happen to agree with Masta that all these protests don't really matter unless there's a serious threat of armed revolt, but considering that most American protests over the last century have been anti-war, I suppose that maddening streak of pacifism in American protesting will make OWS irrelevant a while longer.TakingArms wrote:QUOTE (TakingArms @ Nov 27 2011, 07:53 PM) The fact is that 90% of the population of the US has it pretty damn good, and that's why nobody is paying attention to these protests.

Due to the fact that no one seemed to read what MadPeps posted, I'll re-post the article:Viscur wrote:QUOTE (Viscur @ Nov 27 2011, 09:32 PM) While yes, a lot of our meaningful protests have been pretty pacifist, some of those same protests saw results.
Guns don't always solve all of your problems. I'm willing to bet if it does come to an armed revolt, it would likely be in defense against the police.

Rick Santorum said we should have, essentially, invaded iran during the green revolution.
If we HAD invaded Iran, he would be bitching about how much it cost.
Let the Arabs figure their own crap out, if the terrorists manage to nuke america, we'll turn the whole goddamned place into a sea of glass and worry about how to drill through it to the oil later.

Moreover, police departments tend to work with the officers to encourage those kinds of oversize paychecks; PDs like to use up every dollar of taxpayer money they can get away with, and corruption isn't uncommon. I wouldn't be surprised if some NYPD officers managed to rack up double their usual pay last month.
Dude... easy...
Maybe New York has crooked cops... but make sure you're being specific. My PD gets peanuts for taxpayer funding. We FINALLY got a new squad this year, because the 2007 blew up. We have 2 full-timers, and 6 part timers. We don't get overtime. I make $12.60/hr when I work. Meanwhile, the damned city golf course loses $40,000 a year...
Please go easy on the cop hate... yeah there's some arseholes that have a badge, but I'd bet over half of those cops don't want to be there... even with the overtime.

90%? Wtf?TakingArms wrote:QUOTE (TakingArms @ Nov 27 2011, 07:53 PM) The fact is that 90% of the population of the US has it pretty damn good
Where is this number coming from? Either that's just wrong or we have very different ideas of "pretty damn good." A large number of people have it "pretty damn good" because of ridiculous loans that they can't even pay. Plus, more than 10% of the population are without jobs, so, unless you consider welfare "pretty damn good" . . . .
