The people with the brains and time to implement CSS chose to rpelicate ASGS as it was the easiest road to travel. Since the actual code-work is primarily done by one guy, re-writing the whole security implementation to take it server side would be a much larger and longer job than the current.
That however does not mean it is the best choice for the job, like with anything you have to take into account; the size, budget and team working on a project. Allegiance unfortunately has a very very small one for everything. I would hope that if this game is to make 15-20 years that eventually certain aspects of it will be changed. You cannot sit on the "it aint broke, dont fix it" line forever, time moves and so does technology. Unfortunately for us we lack in people, people who could be coders and have the time, ability and drive to push Allegiance where it truly should be.
All being said, CSS will work and much better than its predecessor which is a step in the right direction by a long mile. The fact we have such a talented guy working on the build of it and that we will own the source and have access to changing it and recompiling it means that if a Linux client is finalized it will be much easier to build a security net around it than with ASGS.

I recall using DOS way back in the day. Heck, I still have the data for some oldschool DOS games in an archive somewhere. Not to mention, it's always good to know how to use it, even with the newer versions of Windows; just being able to access the computer from ANY level lower than the 'idiot-proof' interface they want you to use can help when solving problems.

I may be talking outta my ass here. But wouldnt (can it be done) to have 2 different servers? One to validate callsigns (having all the callsigns linked crap & etc), and another one for the game itself? Wouldnt this prevent the "many callsigns" hacking problem, and also make the "rogue client problem" gone?
