could be said the french 1st army won ww2
QUOTE Erwin Rommel had surrounded five divisions of the French 1st Army near Lille. Though completely cut off, the French fought on for four days under General Molinié, thereby keeping seven German divisions from the assault on Dunkirk and saving a further 100,000 Allied troops.
QUOTE Churchill had promised the French that the British would cover their escape, on the ground it was the French who held the line while the last remaining British were evacuated. Despite concentrated artillery fire and Luftwaffe strafing and bombs, the French stood their ground. On 2 June (the day the last of the British units embarked onto the ships), the French began to fall back slowly, and by 3 June the Germans were two miles from Dunkirk.[39] The night of 3 June was the last night of evacuations. At 10:20 on 4 June, the Germans hoisted the swastika over the docks from which so many British and French troops had escaped under their noses.
Well, you could say they were on the side of the winners. Prior to the invasion in the normandy in WW2, there was "peace" in France, except for some resistance people. It still was a place for recuperation for the troops from the eastern front.Camaro wrote:QUOTE (Camaro @ Oct 21 2011, 04:00 AM) France won WW1.
France was also partly a free country towards the end of WW2 lead by De Gaulle, they aided in the defeat of Germany.
WW1 was won by the massive support by fresh US troops and the british tanks. With the german armies free from the second front in russia, it could have ended quite differently on the western front and the outcome might not have been as bad as the outcome of the treaty of Versailles.

Sorry, that was not achieved by the brave french, but by the incapable german leadership, that let the british actually escape. Different versions of that stop order for the german army float around. A chance for Göring to prove the worth of the Luftwaffe, a chance for peace with the "Brothers" in Englang, etc... It was not because of brave and bitter defence by the french army. I am not at home, otherwise, I could give you some titles and authors of books about that disaster. (It was one for both the brits, as they lost their materiel and for the german, as they lost a major chance of capturing a huge number of british soldiers thus making the brits more inclined to a separate peace treaty.)
