IMHO Deus Ex is a bit overrated. There was so much hype when it came out, but in the end it's just a decently done FPS with (very little) RPG and a little Thief-like sneaking thrown in. Thief was infinitely better, because the stealth mechanics worked so much better. With Deus Ex, they were just tacked on for good measure. Also in Thief, the enemy were just guards trying to make a living and you were a thief, not an assassin...in Deus Ex they ARE bad guys so wasting them is really part of the job description, besides you can just waste everyone pretty easily even on Hard difficulty...try that in Thief and you'll get your ass handed to you, there just isn't enough firepower available to you.
But I'm gonna try 3 as soon as I find my damn 360 controller
Sad I have to play this on the 360... really should get a new video card.

Want bigger games? Log on to play at the official game time: 9pmET/8pmCT/7pmMT/6pmPT every day of the week. Also Saturdays 8pm UTC.
I dare say you played DX1 all wrong... it is about stealth, even if you kill a lot.Spunkmeyer wrote:QUOTE (Spunkmeyer @ Aug 26 2011, 04:29 PM) IMHO Deus Ex is a bit overrated. I didn't play thief beyond a level or two a decade ago, so I don't know how much you learn about the guards there, but the "bad guys" in DX are very relatable.
They have conversations you can eavesdrop on and real motivations, occasionally doubts about their place in the conflict.
Even the disposable UNATCO troops you see in a few sections have enough scripting to make you feel this is just their day job and they have lives even if it only consists of a round trip between the canteen and the barracks.
So the first boss fight in this was basically the worst gaming experience I've had since a similarly impossible boss fight in the original Mass Effect (on Noveria for those who played it). I literally could not find a way to kill the guy and had to nuke the difficulty to easy, and even then it took me 5-6 tries.
I hate stuff like that, where the rest of the game is challenging but not impossible, then they throw in a boss fight that insta-kills you repeatedly with no spark of a "maybe if I try..." that at least lets you feel like you're making progress. I just kept dying, and dying, and dying, and dying, and felt like I had no other options but to put it on easy and hope I could get through it that way. I think that if I'd had some grenades or more ammo I could have beaten him, but coming into the boss fight I had 40 bullets and that was it. For a game that doesn't require that you keep a huge stockpile of weaponry to get through it, it was really jarring to suddenly need a stockpile of WMD to kill the f-ing boss.
Oh well, I stumbled through it and am back to the awesome gameplay of the non-boss fights =)

That's the case in the vampire game Bloodlines. The same friend I mentioned thought this was even worse. The game lets you play through with an guy that is all brains and charm, and can't fight his way out of a wet paper bag... but in the end you still have to get in the ring with a combat monster end boss, and are expected to beat the crap out of him.Bacon wrote:QUOTE (Bacon @ Aug 25 2011, 10:45 PM) Also, in this new one, you can do the whole game w/o killing anybody save for the boss fights. I guess you have to kill them for story purposes... which is sort of stupid if you want to play a character who doesn't kill people.
I hope Deus-Ex 3 lets you do the dirty work in some indirect way on the people the plot requires you to kill. A claymore mine in their fridge, or hiring somebody else to do it.

See, I thoght DX1 was groundbreaking because of the choice it gave you. You could approach every level in a huge variety of ways, and even if you just picked the guns-blazing approach, it made you feel like a total badass knowing that you didn't *have* to go John Rambo on everybody and lay waste to the place. Knowing that you could just sneak past everybody and the game was OK with that just added a layer of excitement to it that a regular FPS lacked.Spunkmeyer wrote:QUOTE (Spunkmeyer @ Aug 26 2011, 06:29 AM) IMHO Deus Ex is a bit overrated. Also, it had some very cool choices to be made. I recall being shocked that I could kill a main character during some climactic scene and the game didn't stop. I did it on a whim, just like 'bah, I'm gonna shoot her' cause she was being a bitch. Well, the game was like 'OK' and let me do it. Most games wouldn't let you do that. They'd give you a game-over sign and make you try again.
Aaaand finally, it had some really cool story elements. IDK... I probably look at it through rose colored glasses, but it was definitely an original game in a sea of sameness.

It's sort of stupid that he didn't mention that in the original you didn't even have to kill any of the bosses as I recall. I'm sorry I don't remember any of it. For you the day spideycw graced your squad with utter destruction was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Sunday

My apologies.
