Picked this up yesterday on my once-every-two-weeks descent from the mountains to gather supplies and check that civilization still exists. One of these days I anticipate arriving in Sonora and finding only zombies and burned buildings. It's gonna happen.
Anyway, this game is the tits. It's like an updated version of the 1st one, which is a huge compliment because the 1st one was well ahead of its time in many ways. The awesome inventory system is back, there are a ton of choices to be made that seem to really impact how the world reacts to you, and above all, the art style is fantastic. Lots of blacks and golds and interesting architecture. It's really very pleasing to look at, even if the graphics themselves are a little dated.
There's also a really deep RPG system and a fairly cool hacking mini-game that I still don't quite understand, but is still fun.
Highly recommend it, especially if you were a fan of the 1st one.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
I decided to relive the days gone by in my new blog.

Except the big about dorjan being jelly, that's just spidey's ego.

Well as I love to read my own writing, I'll go a little more in-depth in case some of you aren't familiar with the 1st one (which you should be because it's on par with Allegiance as far as groundbreaking gameplay goes).
The whole idea behind the Deus Ex franchise is the ability to approach every mission as you see fit. There are often 3 or more approaches to any given mission, and you're free to choose which path you want to take. However, to take some of the paths, you need to create your character appropriately. So, for instance, there might be a wall you can jump over to reach your destination, or there might be a computer you can hack to gain entry, or there might be a "through the front door" guns blazing approach as well. Depending on which augmentations you've put your points into, you will be better at specific paths than others.
An example from the game is in an early mission, you're tasked with gaining access to the city morgue. Just by probing around, I found 3 very different routes. My choice was to sweet talk the cop at the front counter, who then gave me access. But you could also have found the secret entrance into the morgue, found the access code in an office in the police station, and gotten in that way. Another way I think that mission could have been done was shooting your way through the police station and taking what you want. I'm not 100% sure that that is a viable option or that the game would ultimately allow it, but it probably would.
Other than that, the story and setting are both very good so far. Good sci-fi themes that fit well with the world, character, and missions. The voice acting is borderline terrible, but it's serviceable.
Go buy it =P

A friend of mine thinks the best part of the original Deus Ex is that you don't have to kill anybody if you prefer to be clever and sneaky. That's very rare. I hope this third edition gives as much freedom.

<bp|> Maybe when I grow up I can be a troll like PsycH
<bp|> or an obsessive compulsive paladin of law like Adept
I've heard that the 2nd is crap. I never played it but apparently it didn't have anything that made the 1st so good.
Also, in this new one, you can do the whole game w/o killing anybody save for the boss fights. I guess you have to kill them for story purposes... which is sort of stupid if you want to play a character who doesn't kill people.

FYI: You can get highres textures for the first one.Skeletor wrote:QUOTE (Skeletor @ Aug 25 2011, 08:33 PM) Ok I'm sold. I'm gonna check the first one out, then the second.
The second wasn't as good as the first, but it wasn't awful. I was especially disappointed that the dragon's tooth sword in the second was nothing like the first (it was actually a case where the graphics in the second didn't look as good as the first). I preferred augmentation in the first to the second.
