The link in Grimm's post points to what you must download and install.

/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> Hey, Grimm, can you tell an old dummy where to put the new directx file?
I get a popup that askes where I want to put it. I have no idea, I guess I could tell it in the PC. /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />

erm, you run the direct x installer thing from ms, then it downloads and installs everything for you.
i think you can just save it anywhere and then run it

What it asks for is a location for extracting its files. Doesn't matter when you tell it to. After it extracts, the installer will automatically start up and begin installing DX.

It did not automatically start when I tried it.
After unpacking the files to that location, go to that location and launch DXsetup.exe.

yeah.. that's fine.. or your desktop. You can delete it later. If I recall correctly, you're only saving the installer stub. A small app that you run to get a complete install. Windows and the installer program will take care of where all the DX stuff needs to go.
