Some of you will know about my ping worries.

For whatever reason, my avg ping has now increased to 450. So please understand that I will mostly be confined to probing and scouting. Understand that when you call to d the base, I will come, but that it is an iffy proposition. As Nanning probably will be as well.

I ran a test game, dropped a probe and could not even destroy it by ramming it. Likewise firing seemed to have no effect that I could see.
(I wanted to train my strafing/aiming skills). Unless your own stuff is immune to being shot by you.

Sadly, I am not at a stage where I could even remotely consider moving on to commanding, and it seems I will lose out on a lot on what the game has to offer. I also honestly prefer flying atm.

So all I am asking for is a bit of understanding. I am just as frustrated when things go wrong, believe me.

And when I ask for orders, try to respond. I cannot assess the situation well enough to be that effective on my own.

Squad mates, I will from now on refuse to accept random waypoint orders unless you tell me why. If you are in trouble, spam a few "Need repairs." I will come. But do not send me away and then get annoyed. You have a plan for me, tell me. And: Comm Orders get priority.

Thank you very much in advance

450 isn't bad.

Until the EU server came around, lots of European players had 700+

Heck, to planet, I've been known to get 1100ms times occasionally and I'm an 18 hour drive straight north of it. (yes, that's two 1's and two 0's, not a typo. eleven-hundred)

You should be able to D the base at least somewhat in an INT with 450. Just STFN (Shoot The Frickin' Nans).

Glad to hear things are not that bad. I guess those complaints about the Netcode are quite a serious issue, actually. And Africa may not be as far behind in Internet quality as I thought.

Though we are hopelessly oversubscribed on the backbone for sure.

Alo0so: by default, friendly fire is off. So your own probe would be indestructable regardless of ping until you turned it off.

The netcode is partially to blame, but the fact that I'm in Minnesota and Planet is in Texas (almost straight south of me) is the main problem. My traceroute to planet goes through a ridiculous number of hops in a weird diagonal-Z formation across the country from east to west (Minneapolis, Chicago, Denver, Dallas...wtf?), whereas on the old GPZ server, it was all straight east on high capacity lines so on a good day I'd get <100ms pings even though it was MUCH farther away in Europe.

Mystery explained, then, as regards no dmg.

I kinda lost heart when I saw that in every game I had the worst ping of those in the lobby. And noting that I could die in 2 seconds, but that it could take as much as 10 seconds to even get an assist on a 0 aspect angle shot. (Ie. straight from behind, no lead, Velocity vector in line, bullet on target)

Now for some more practice. Shooting your own probes is not perfect, but it is better than nothing.

Thank you all

Keep note that it seems that with the way Alleg's netcode works, if your CPU is maxed out, your ping suffers.

Make certain that alleg is the only thing hogging your CPU when you play. The old p3 1ghz laptop with a gig of ram I started playing this on in '06 used to start having 1500+ms ping times if something else started gobbling my CPU even on a connection that, just a few seconds before, was at 70ms.

I am on a pentium 4 Hyperthreading. Not even dual core. Upgrading shortly though. Kaspersky is a CPU hog, and that may be part of the problem. Certainly my desktop has slowed markedly at startup. Being in the position of running a laptop, a desktop and a netbook of different capacities, I would add that Kaspersky on a netbook is iffy, IMHO. Security Essentials definitely causes less slowdown. Thx for the recommendation FreeBeer.

Initially I had my doubts about starting this thread, for fear of sounding whiney. But it has been valuable. Thanks. Had I done this in 2008, I might not just have left and given up.

With the fake Newbie thing going around: I was here in 2008 Jan under the Nick Githyanki. Cannot have played more than 2 games, though. (In the interests of full disclosure).

Ha! We have lots of techies here who have *lots* of experience making Alleg run on less-than-optimal machines. Never be afraid to ask. :D

I also wouldn't see a problem with you pausing your antivirus while playing alleg as long as you don't have anything else running and you remember to turn it back on before you go browsing for pr0n or playing facebook games. :P

When I started playing, I used to play on dial-up and having ultra ubber pings, something around 600+ms. You can own in a laggy scout. Lag-prox drops and random jumps are the deadliest weapons of all. Just learn to use your lag for you benefit. The best tip I can give you is, goind head on wont work. Everything else relies on how fast your upload/download is working.
