It has a much lower footprint and lower overhead than any symantec product and it gets fewer false positives while catching more actual threats.

Until recently my wife's computer had a copy of Symantec Corporate on there. It let several things slip by that MSE later caught. (after wiping her PC because she got trojaned and then rooted via facebook links, I checked what she'd gotten again in a virtual machine and MSE caught it all).

It's never going to be perfect because as it gets more popular virus writers will adapt to the signature detection it uses like they've been doing for years with Symantec products but for now it's free and works quite well -- I've been using it for over a year now.

MSE has never caught a single thing for me, which doesn't really mean anything. Anti-virus software is highly overrated. This day in age you should focus on smart browsing and having a secure connection to the internet. Really, more people should be worried about preventing malicious software/behavior. If you don't believe in abortions, maybe you shouldn't have gotten preggers.

True, MSE is not perfect. It can take up to 3 days before they implement a fresh virus in their database. MSE does not block a lot of annoyware, like those spam browser add ons you can install at some freeware. Technically not a virus.

I can easy give 10 malware samples which are not detected by MSE. I can also easy give 10 malware samples which are not detected by Symantec. Unless you are a high profile CEO of BigCorp or ViceLord of your gov't, likely you will not encounter those.

MSE hates those Windows 7 "loaders" to turn your technet copy of Windows into a "registered" one. If your Windows is pirated, it's probably a no-no.

But, if you want an antivirus scanner for free, M$ did a great job in eradicating a lot of viri worldwide and protect pc's. It is also compatible with the most annoying applications. MSE even has a free small business license (up to10 pc's).

To be fair, Malwarebytes has a very active "hunter" group, feared by the evil ones. MBAM is specialized against annoyware and fake apps. The free version is good enough.

MSE + MBAM = brick wall.

A tip for the "meh on antivirus" guys. Put your browser behind www.sandboxie.com is pure pownage (free version only has a short nag screen first time you fire it up each time). If you are a bit tech savvy, you can turn your pc into fort knox, while surfing the most horrible (p0rn) and dangerous (read: p0rn) websites.

Pfft.

pr0n malware/virii are nowhere NEAR the most dangerous stuff out there.

You'll get more searching for non-torrented software cracks/keygens or looking for "watch x for free online" and hitting up chinese websites.
