I think both solutions could work, and if there are people willing and to work on both I don't see the problem. What are you going to do, fire someone?KGJV wrote:QUOTE (KGJV @ May 31 2011, 10:23 AM) The solution is not to AI the comms. It's to change the core so the commander role is less important.
...
so IMHO the answer is: lot of core changes + few code changes rather than a 'huge comm AI monster thing'.

I keep saying we should do Development Brawls.
They take little commanding ability, and it's easier and more action-packed for newbies. No more 2-3 sector long pod drifts. No having the team spread out over 5 sectors.
If players would just do it instead of assuming it's boring, they'll see how much fun it really is.
DEVELOPMENT BRAWLS.
TRY IT
I've done such a game a couple of times, and each one, win or lose, had us all on the edge of our seats the entire game.

It is Karnage! Don Karnage! Roll the r!
So... the solution is to make the game less fun?
I dunno, I'd rather sit in NOAT for a while than play some "dumbed down" version of Allegiance designed make commanding easy.
I want people to play Allegiance more, but not at the cost of losing what Allegiance is. I think there is no shortage of "dumbed down" games about shooting at things in this world.

these forums are like the game, 10 years old. sigh.
oh well I'll stick to my blog and our private forums. waste of time here.

2 new settings (debug build only)....
JimmyNightHawk ragequit
and
KGJV Boot Resign

These bugs haven't been fixed yet because don't have any developers interested in fixing them up. --Tigereye

So it's "Agree with me, or you are all stupid". You don't even play anymore, so you know that you're correct? We have easy settings already. Putting it to plenty with 10 miners just means that Jimmy wins faster.KGJV wrote:QUOTE (KGJV @ May 31 2011, 08:16 PM) oh now i remember why I stopped using these forums. we can't filter :

What madpeeps said
This is the approach to take and exactly what I was thinking. For commanders you need a nureal network, an intelligent filter, and lots of data. Things we have or could get in short order. Believe it or not Kage there are a number of people with the skill to pull of a fuzzy ( only a co-winkie-dink to our Fuzzy ) logic implementation including yours truly. Its a common topic taught in many Engineering schools for example. I just don't have the skills to code it or will to go through this kind of thread ever again.
The problem becomes one of how to motivate peeps (this time it isnt a co-winkie-dink) to work with a knowledgable dev for it to see the light of day. Tutorials or key map changes might be a higher priority but motivating someone who has the skills AND the wills to do it is the issue.

Ssssh
then have the 'community' fix that "issue".MrChaos wrote:QUOTE (MrChaos @ Jun 5 2011, 09:06 PM) Tutorials or key map changes might be a higher priority but motivating someone who has the skills AND the wills to do it is the issue.
I don't about other devs but I know for me what is missing to 'motivate' me.
I'm willing to code anything you guys can think of or design as long as :
1. it's something "community wide" agreed that this is worth spending time on.
2. it's been deeply discussed in details with people who have a clue about what they're talking about. the spamers and noisy people are kept out of these discussions so we can make real design progress instead of wasting time fighting drama.
3. the working environment, team organisation and management are these of a modern FOSS project (even if the code is not).
4. the supporting systems (web server, forums, svn, bugtracker, beta servers,...) are owned and operated by the community not owned by a few persons who also run the show.
5. there will be people to test and give feedback. Real tests and feebacks, not whine about this or that.
This all may sound a bit whiny but think about it and you'll see that none of these conditions are met today so you might understand my frustrated POV.
I value my time like everyone here should. So above a certain threshold of wasting it, I'd rather do something else.
I guess I could live without 3 and 5 but 1,2 and 4 are really mandatory for me to write a single line of code again.
I can't fix 1 and 2 alone.
I'm working on fixing 4 in my own way and hope to 'move' the community to a new 'home' some day soon.
What other choice do I have anyway ?
