Hey, guys! So I'm wondering if there's a way to make Allegiance use a sound device other than the Windows XP Default? The goal here is so my wife can watch Netflix while I am playing Alleg. The video works fine on the two monitors, but I need a way to route the audio.

Windows Version (and Service Packs): XP SP3
Processor Speed: Quad 2.5
RAM: 4GB
Video Card (Make and Model#): ATI HD5700
Sound Card (Make and Model#): ASUS VIA HD Audio

Thanks!

Why isn't she nanning you instead? :D

You get a cookie, since I don't think anyone has asked this question before. To my knowledge, there isn't a way, but perhaps someone else has tackled the issue and will chime in.

Allegiance itself always uses Windows default sound device, there is no option to change it (without changes on source code).

I know that some programs (Winamp, VLC Mediaplay, Teamspeak, Mumble) have an option to choose which output device (soundcard) they use.

The history of open-source Allegiance is paved with the bodies of dead code branches, forum flame wars, and personal vendettas. But a community remains because people still love the game.

you know quack you can hook up netflix to a few other devices as well, like a blueray or xbox360, and this would solve your problem (although in my experience someone streaming at the same time as alleg gives you killer packet loss and essentially makes it unplayable)

Well we usually stream from my brother-in-law's PS3 but he wanted to use it. We could stream from the Wii but the wifi is on the fritz. I actually just bought a Roku player which solves the problem for now. But still from time to time we might like to playback from a webpage that isn't supported by the Roku, like CBS.com for my wife to get her ridiculous night-time dramas that I totally don't know anything about because why would I ever be interested in something like that?

Your Internet must be really crappy. In my house we have one Comcast service, and we can run torrents, my wife can stream netflix, my brother in law can play WoW or whatever it is that he does in his little cave, and I can play Alleg or COD or whatever on my PC with no noticable lag. Every once in a while we overload the router and have to reboot it, but that's rare.

In windows 7, I had to assign allegiance to use the headphone driver on my pc. Otherwise it was always running to the desktop speakers even when I had the headphones plugged in. I believe that I did this from the volume control (next to the clock) but it was a while ago so I don't quite remember. If you have two sound cards (in my case there are two "sound cards" on the mother board that windows sees, one for the headphones and one for the desktop speakers), then you should be able to assign it to allegiance from the windows desktop.

I have a Logitech Cordless headset that lets me do this. As long as I have Firefox open using the default sound device, it remembers that. Then if I change it to use the headphones Firefox will still use the default speakers and anything opened *after* the driver was switched to the Logitech device will use that.
