i think what happens with a lot of ppl (at least from what i've seen) is that they take a break b/c of drama, life, etc and then find another game that they get sucked into.
i've been playing lots of TF2 lately, but honestly, cringe when I think about playing a pug. Haven't had time for a SG on Sunday's lately which does bother me:(.
Why we REALLY need playerbase growth

Eh. I guess to some extent that makes sense -- game gets old, veterans get tired of it no matter how good the game itself is, new players get discouraged by the very fact of its age, perhaps... But on the other hand, thing is, it's 2011, but I don't think anyone's made a better game yet -- at least not in any even remotely related genre. Even today, Allegiance is quite unique and wonderful. The graphics may not have aged well, but I don't know of any modern games that offer gameplay as complex, and at the same time as engrossing and varied and exciting... Hey, if someone made Allegiance 2 maybe I'd give up on this decade-old game too, but I don't see anything like that on the horizon. Unfortunately.fuzz_windows wrote:QUOTE (fuzz_windows @ May 5 2011, 03:33 PM) It's $#@!ing 2011 people.
Get real.
So I can't help but feel that Allegiance just has to survive, despite its age... There's nothing else quite like it, after all. But maybe that's overly sentimental.

For anyone who cares, i left cos each update / tweak took slightly longer to get to work, and eventually i couldn't be doing with the faff.
Now i know you don't care, and i'm crap, and you don't remember me etc, but i'm just trying to contribute to the discussion.
Allegiance was / is great fun, and got me hooked, so as far as i was concerned it didn't need "fixing".
If you promise to leave it alone, then i'll spend a few hours getting it to work again, but i'm not bothering if it'll change again in a few weeks!.
Also, if you REALLY don't care that i left or why, then you wouldn't bother to say. Saying means you care baby!
Edit -- Also, with a re-read, i appear kinda paranoid, and i guess that is another thing that stopped me making the effort. I didn't always find the community a nice place to be. Now this may just be me being a pussy, or a noob, (stfu noob, stfu and play noob, gtfo noob, die in a couch fire noob), but i recall another game that someone (deathrender?) pointed me at, some sort or ww2 sim, and those guys were nice. They had greeters in the lobby ffs, like GAP!, their job being to meet and greet newbies and point them in the right direction.
Their only problem was that the product was not much cop. You lot having an excellent game here. For those people who say it is out of date, think how many folks play flash games that are AWFUL. I have no magic bullet for you, but the age of the game shouldn't kill it. Not yet anyway.
in short, i would suggest, only suggest, a mere noobs opinion.....
Stop mucking about so that new players have to keep adapting to new gameplay and / or get their computer to agree with it.
Try and get everyone to be NICE. Now i know that sounds terrible, and makes me seem like a dick, but it seemed to me that there was too much of a "grow a thick skin and you'll be fine" attitude. Why force folks to grow a thick skin? Just don't be dicks.
Only my views, other views are available, not applicable to all. yakka yakka yadda ya

that_bloke, I agree with you. It's one of the reasons also that beta sucked.
Most people do *NOT* want for fool around trying to get things to work all the time, once maybe, after that, it's poor organization.
It's also sad that all the hi-res textures haven't been finalized and put into the core game.
Come back anytime.

No, I stepped down due to a number of RL issues, up to and including the fact that it was affecting my home life. Dealing with a few combative asshats who want it "their way, all the time, no matter what" and are unwilling to compromise for *anything* despite multiple efforts on my part to work things out was turning me into a very different person. The other RL issues are personal, not related to allegiance, and none of your business so I won't be discussing those.jbansk wrote:QUOTE (jbansk @ May 5 2011, 09:08 AM) LOL, you stepped down because nobody would work with your incompetent ass. You were clearly unqualified and incapable of bringing ANYTHING of value to the development of Alleg and after a couple of months of doing ZILTCH, you hit the road. You're not fooling anyone with that bullshiat.
I stepped down because it became clear I could no longer dedicate the time the position required thanks to RL.
And a small part of that is due to certain people screwing around on PURPOSE and ruining games FOR EVERYONE PLAYING because they *hate* the admins irrationally.jbansk wrote:QUOTE (jbansk @ May 5 2011, 09:08 AM) It is that ridiculous logic that further proves you are completely clueless. The game has already reached the point of no return
Another part of that is that the code in R5 was rushed and broke the game for a large number of people.
The fixes that were put in for R6 the last time I tested it actually made the graphics issues WORSE for me *and* created quite a few new ones related to dual monitors.
Despite the constant cries of "RELEASE R6 NOW!", doing so would be not only REPEATING the R5 mistake, it would be doing so in a worse fashion.
THOSE are some of the major reasons that the game is in its current state. It has nothing to do with the admins in any way, shape, or form.
Stop drinking that Kool-Aid. It makes you look like an idiot in front of the community.
Try "over 5 years". I daresay I understand the situation FAR better than you do.jbansk wrote:QUOTE (jbansk @ May 5 2011, 09:08 AM) I can't help but laugh when, after more than a year of exposure to this situation, you still fail to grasp the obvious.
My reasons for a six month siesta from the game are going to be different then thatblokes I think (I know you and think of you quite fondly bloke
) and probably match FreeBeer, DuckWarrior, Evan, Globey, and others. Ive seen some of them about again which gives me hope *shrug* The bull@#(! just gets old after years and years in a nutshell.
Part of the problem is the length of time specifically and this is general thing to all games. The new people comes into a bewildering number of factoids and a player population that can spank their bottoms with ease. On top of that the majority of the player population has the game mechanics and subtle "tricks" down to the point your called a "$#@!ing $#@!tard $#@! who $#@!ing cannot do $#@!" for small honest mistakes and getting the details wrong. So long new player
On the other hand the long timers watch in horror as the those aforementioned "$#@!ing $#@!tard $#@! who $#@!ing cannot do $#@!" do not even RTFC, let alone work as a team. So when you get to the point that you think $#@! it someone else can drop probes and find yourself enraged by the small game details... so long long time player
The longer you play the more of a free pass one gets to $#@! up. I went on a nan run last night packing a gat instead of nan
. You're a freshly minted seven probably *boot* is in your future. I got a lol pm. Part of the reason for a no boot is that Ive done my fair share of good stuff etc etc and Im a known quantity. A newer player not so much especially if you come out of the gate on the community's bad side *shudder*. So long interested player
It has to be pants on the head easy to install and maintain, it has to be stable enough it is familiar like an old shoe BUT dynamic enough to keep you interested, game play can be a watered down gruel but have some nice cheesy chunks for thos lol moments that keep one playing. Need enough noobs to become voobs so that the elite pricks can enjoy themselves and the voobs can scale the elite mountain with boner made of steel for the game, and the noobs can be noobs without pissing off everyone else.
These are general issues to all games and the solution is to have a large enough player base to handle things. That requires advertising or some kind of general announcement in the press (think code release from MS). All of the low hanging fruit ideas have been picked and tried by the advertising team many a moon ago. It didn't work. Someone is rallying the old player base it seems to me and that is a grand idea. Whoever it is please, please, please have them fly with their well known nick it will help a ton in getting me to stick around for another game or two.
A small all of you can do is make a point to play a PU game when you have a free moment. I play one or two then bounce. I try to do it 3-4 times a week. At differentish times when I can and try to play right too.
Finally Im going to haul out my dead horse for another go: It seems to me that there is something fubared related to the servers/game play and what appears to latenvy issues. That along with the vet burn out thingee made me pack it in for so long

Great post MrC.
I enjoyed the game a lot more since I decided to just chill out & take the whole thing less seriously. If people yell at me I just annoy them. Chances are I already have little respect for the guy yelling at me so why should I care what they say?
As for me - I'm somewhat distracted by other games which I am enjoying a lot at the moment. Why play games if not to have fun? Also I quite liked CC and feel like a bit of a noob when I've tried out XC.
