Although I haven't seen as much games as many others and can have incomplete information, I can't help myself that there is some stuff in allegiance, that is hardly ever used, if ever at all, in a serious matter.
Examples include the ever-popular Freighter (from what I hear - mostly just a joke ship) and Seismic Missiles/Drones (I used them for target practice on one on none games, but thats about it). Some opinions also state that other such things might be the turrets on FBs and Retroboosters. GT solar inverter might also be an example.
Is there more?
Are those really so useless as they seem to be?
Are you "keep them there, whatever", "useless junk, throw it out", "replace it with something meaningful" or "tweak it so it becomes useful" type?
Rarely or not-at-all used Allegiance stuff

Freighter may have been a joke, but since peeps have learned to use it, it has become the SY miner killer and probe machine. Coupled with the fact OH has a phat turret on it, it can seriously hurt,
Retroboosters need keeping, too much fun!
I am all for tweaking @#(!, but some things are just the way they are, we are always going to have flavours of the month in faction and tech, we are also never going to have all tech used a lot, some of it is specific for good reason.

Also, Seismic missiles are really for blowing up rocks. As the need to blow up rocks is hardly ever needed, it is not used. Turrets on FBs are generally not used because in exchange for that turret, you could have another FB! YAY!
A hero is not one who never falls, but one who gets up again and again, NEVER losing sight of one's dream!

My point exactly - so why are they there? What do they want from us? ;-)Elzam V. Branstein wrote:QUOTE (Elzam V. Speaking of freighter, it's never used to resupply capital ships...
I did however make supply run in a fig recently.
Delivered 3 ABs to a bomber which rolled on to garr after blowing a tech base.
I boosted two sectors in a fig with nothing but the 3 ABs. No shields, no guns, nothing.
I was about to make another run for more ABs and ammo when the enemy resigned.

what if you didn't have enough cash for fig/bs for everyone? Then maybe the turret will be useful? Some people can't escort in ships very well
I decided to relive the days gone by in my new blog.

Except the big about dorjan being jelly, that's just spidey's ego.

Seismics can be useful in a few specific situations - such as when the enemy has a crapton of money (giga specs that weren't killed early enough) and is spamming garrisons all over the place, or to defensively to remove rocks which a TP2 scout or such could hide behind, or when you need to deny a techrock to the enemy, already have heavy bombers, and have enough money to buy seismics but not a techbase of your own to plant on said rock.Jersy wrote:QUOTE (Jersy @ Jan 7 2011, 03:00 PM) My point exactly - so why are they there? Allegiance has a lot of little-used tech good only for specific situations, and its all nice to have. Removing it just dumbs down the game and prunes back tactics which although rarely used, are still useful in some situations. See also: Turrets on F/Bs, XRM AB, TTs, EMP Cannon, etc.
Freighters are useful not as the name says. They're more like the scout and barricade of capships. Probe a few sectors with a freighter, and the enemy will either give up doing things uneyed or spend a ton of time deprobing. IIRC, its cheaper to buy a tower in a freighter than it is to buy a tower from F5. You can blockade your own green door with a sideways freighter to stop enemy HTT runs. Or blockade the enemy red door as an effective camping tool (harder but still effective). I once saw a freighter ram an enemy frigate (or was it a cruiser?) backwards through an aleph it just entered and out of the sector.
