i don't see where you tried it without AVG installed? Maybe I missed it, but I see where you say you uninstalled and reinstalled?

Hi tmc,

Try putting this into a file named

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Allegiance\allegiance.cfg

Code: Select all

[Allegiance]
PublicLobby=autoupdate.alleg.net
PublicMessageURL=http://autoupdate.alleg.net/autoupdate/motd/messageoftheday.mdl
FilelistSite=http://autoupdate.alleg.net
FilelistDirectory=/autoupdate/game
FileListCRC = 6C1D5475
FilelistSize = 14385

[AllSrvUI]
Site=http://autoupdate.alleg.net
AutoUpdateURL=http://autoupdate.alleg.net/Autoupdate/Game/Standalone/AutoUpdate.exe
AutoUpdateCRC=8CA52A5E
Directory=/Autoupdate/Game
FileListCRC = ABFE9D21
FilelistSize = 2698

; THIS IS A VALID CONFIG FILE
Can you also export your registry from:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Allegiance\1.0

And then post it in here so we can see what your settings are?

Do you have any IE proxy settings in Internet Options?

While trying the other things, have a peek at your hosts file. C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS in WinXP (at least on mine). Look for anything with the alleg.net domain and comment them out, then save.

-I never tried it without any AV; didnt think about it while reinstalling

-Setting connection port to HTTP doesn't change anything

-Backtrak: already fixed my allegiance.cfg without any effect

-My hosts file is empty (except for localhost)

-No IE proxy settings

You can give my installer a try, maybe it fixes your problem (somehow):

Unsurprisingly, that didn't help. Thanks though.

Also, my alleg install is on a different partition than my OS; would that matter?

No, it shouldn't be a problem being on another partition.

The issue is that *something* is blocking Allegiance's access to port 80 (the standard http:// port). We know this because only the MotD uses that, so if you can't see the scrolling message, we know it's an issue with port 80. It could be a router rule, it could be a firewall, it could be AV software, etc. I know you claim to have tried all of these, but the very symptom you have resolves to that specific issue.

By any chance did you have Norton or McAffee on this machine at any point in time and have since removed it? With Norton in particular (but I'll lump McAffee in there, too) you need to use their removal tool. (Uninstall, unfortunately, doesn't really uninstall it completely. The tool is necessary.)
