The main reason I dont play is because of ASGS. I can only get it to authenticate in Win 2003 compatability mode and even then I get consistent crashes on various offsets related to file operations (so not playable).

Accessability is one of the most important things in game design and FreeAllegiance is a total failure at it.
I dont even want to mention the default key mapping again.

What does all of this have to do with the license?

"... but I got .net framework 2.1 installed!"
true story.
There is no .net framework 2.1

I correct my self. It was at the time when we were able to run allegiance if he had installed .net 1.1 and if we don't have installed .net2.0. On my 2nd installation I ignored the 1.1 only and nothing else, and as many people did, I thought 2.0 = 1.1 + a little bit more.

Because these problems are more important than a stupid license, which already allows us the make THIS possible...

The history of open-source Allegiance is paved with the bodies of dead code branches, forum flame wars, and personal vendettas. But a community remains because people still love the game.

Thank you Freebeer. I'm glad to see that some people don't take a new idea automatically wrong. I won't say it's THE idea of the year but, if you're ready to trust someone with a master in psychology, we need different ways to promote Allegiance. I'm sure a big "brainstorming" has already been made and I would be glad to contribute.

Don't ask him too much...

Actually, there are usually two different kind of websites. The first one is "classic" (download.com, tucows, etc.) and the second one is more more recent and came up when the "open source" philosophy became famous.
I going to simplify but if you want nice graphics that need a new graphic card, you're gonna look for a commercial games (like "Modern Warfare" or COD). But some players (I noticed they where older than the teenagers who usually just look for graphics) prefer to play a good game. They don't expect unbelievable graphics but good gameplay, etc. And they probably will use open-source games because they trust them and they like the philosophy (games made by gamers for gamers), with a nice community.

I can be wrong (on this one, I would be surprised), but Allegiance is not a commercial game nor an open-source game. So, we look for players who are used to play games of the second kind. How do you explain the sucess of games like Urban Terror or Bzflag? Certainly not because of their graphics. They are open-source... and fun. Well, like Allegiance : free, fun, nice community (although lately... ). But Allegiance isn't Open-source. So how can we attract people if we can't put Allegiance into Sourceforge or Framasoft (well known french website) ? (where the players who might be interested in Allegiance are)
We can put it into the huge site (download.com) in the middle of everything... I doubt it works fine. But if we could join the open-source wave...

Therefore, the idea of a channel in Justin TV is not so bad, I think. It's not enough, but it's just another way to promote Allegiance. Making it open-source, if it was possible would be the best.

I just wanted to share my thoughts to you... unfortunately with my poor english.

I've got news for you: Allegiance is open source.

Hell, the source code is even already hosted at Source Forge.

Well it is open-source, but there are many open source licenses. Ours happens to have these not-so-nice parts!

You may not use or distribute this Software or any derivative works in any form for
commercial purposes. Examples of commercial purposes would be running business
operations, licensing, leasing, or selling the Software, distributing the Software for use
with commercial products or any other activity which purpose is to procure a commercial
gain to you or others.

...

5. That Microsoft is granted back, without any limitations and on a royalty free basis,
the rights to reproduce, install, use, modify, distribute and transfer your
modifications to the Software source code or data.

which means microsoft still "owns" the game.

Allegiance isn't open source.
It's shared source.

I just want to be sure. Let's say tomorrow Microsoft wants Allegiance back to develop another game (Allegiance 2, for instance)

1- Can they use the code as it is today, with all the modifications that our dear programmers have done?
2- Can we still play this game as it is today? Or is it over...

1. Yes.
2. Depends on them. They can shut us down anytime. The best is thing is: do not get their attention, and have some allies in MSR. (Asking them for a GPL license is getting their attention and will weaken our allies.)
