Does surround sound work on Allegiance? It would be nice if I can tell which direction the enemy is firing at me.

As a side note and simultaneously a question to that,

This is a 3D game. Sound systems generally simulate only 2 dimensions - right? So you can already here the sufficient direction with simple stereo but still missing the 3rd dimension, unfortunately.

As a side note to that side note: Can human really resolve the destination of more complex signals? We do have only two receivers (ears). So I guess, 3D listening is impossible.

Please correct me if I am wrong ^^

Actually, I just want to know if Allegiance supports surround sound.

Same thing is true for your eyes. And i am sure that the visible surface of my screen is 2D.

I have a Megadolon I got for free. If I was just purchasing a surround sound headset I would not have purchased it. It is not really worth the price. The sound is ok, but the mic sucks as it outputs a lot of noise/static. I really had to tweak mine a lot to make it low enough to at least be bearable. I read about others' experience with it and found most seemed to have the same issue but the static level seemed to vary per each headset. There are better options out there anyway. Look at Turtle Beach or Triton.

I haven't actually used the headset with Allegiance so can't say how well surround works. I guess I could try it out if you really want to know.

Simple experiment: Close your eyes and ask someone else to clap their hands or snap their fingers at various locations. Try to determine where the sound comes from.

As a matter of fact, humans are pretty good at 3D hearing. I don't know the exact reasons (and I am not sure this is completely known) but I think the rather complicated structure of your outer ear has something to do with it. Time difference and difference in volume of the signals received by each ear definitely play the most important role.

there are noticeable bugs with more than 2 channels in allegiance, so I would say the answer is NO.

One of these bugs, when in > 2 ch mode, is that your background application's volume (say, winamp) get's cut in/out depending on what you do in the game.

It certainly does. I used to play with 4 speakers + woofer, and the sound scape was really cool. Now I just use headphones for TS / Mumble... but surround sounds is way cool.

I've only tried with 4 though, so I don't know of 7.1

ok there is indeed some hardware quirks.. Tried it with a 5.1 "Envy" PCI card and it sucked (the bugs i mentioned above were present, but I did notice it working) - Now I am playing it on a Realtek 7.1 HD on-board but in 5.1 mode (surround speakers on SIDE channels) and it is indeed working flawlessly.
