My favorite encounter with a new player by far has to be one player who followed all the instructions he was given and was quite eager to learn as much as possible.
After about 2 hours of playing where every few minutes he'd type "Ack. Hello?" intermittently over chat while flying he finally flew into a text-rage asking why the "$#@!ing game" kept giving him @#(!ty "Link disengaged" messages every few minutes even though he was still connected.
I spent about 5 minutes laughing my ass off after realizing that his Teamspeak client kept dropping him.
To be fair, the voice is very similar to the autopilot message.
