Epic New Front Page! UPDATED 12/21 (**NOW PRETTY**)
You got anything against using this YouTube clip
Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.
Bacon ma'man. Much respect.
Edit: Although the intro is nice and all, the trailer is much better for attracting people.

I decided to relive the days gone by in my new blog.

Remember, what I say is IMO always. If I say that something sucks, it actually means "I think it sucks" OK?

Except the big about dorjan being jelly, that's just spidey's ego.

This is pretty much exactly what I meant with a L4D style opening video by the way. Exciting stuff that highlights some aspects of the gameplay. Full quality fraps using some of the original factions (rather than butt ugly TF or GT) and it will look good as well.juckto wrote:QUOTE (juckto @ Dec 15 2009, 07:05 AM) I just watched the videos.I think 'random dogfighting' is, well, just that. And it implies the whole 'Quake in Space'. It would be a lot of work, but I'd like to see the community to put together a bit of a montage:
/edit
As for now, I'd maybe swap to the trailer Juckto suggested and link the original opening video with one of the buttons, or just put it back into the game with the music where it belongs.

Great idea to redo the frontpage and great ideas in the new version.
I'm with girly about the borders around the banner however. I think they are a bit out of the rest of the design (it's better integrated in the v2 though).
And if you want to do some fancy effects in javascript without having to write everything from scratch you can use a framework (mootools is great iirc but there are others).

The new page looks awesome Bacon; kudos man really a great job!
The border around the banner could look more integrated with the page if it was of the same style as the other borders (thicker and rounded), but I think you are right in wanting it there.
I love the general setup of the page and don’t think it’s really missing the screenshots. I don’t see the order of the links being a huge problem tbh, but I would totally link the “Learn to Play” one with a quick guide instead of the AFS. Don’t go about making one yourself Bacon, Cashto has one at a pretty advanced stage.
As for the videos, I would leave the original Trailer there; it’s dated yes, but it does a good job at presenting the background story. I would not, however, use the Intro (i.e. this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwq61Y0Uhdo) It’s a nice video but I think it’s for the most part a little too slow and we already have one slow video. The second one should be fast pace action imho. I’d love to see s.thing like this to be realized:
). I can’t frap or edit it, I’m really not good with that stuff, but if you need people for shooting it I’m willing to help.

I think that would be totally perfect (assuming we can keep it fast pacejuckto wrote:QUOTE (juckto @ Dec 15 2009, 06:05 AM) Scout proxes int boosting after it - preferably recorded from that external view which shows your ship in the foreground and your target as the centre of the screen, so you'd see the mines appear behind the scout and then the enemy plough into it.
Galvers destroying an op, preferably taken from that external view that allows you to view your target directly.
Bomb run from nans point of view - the one in that old gameplay footage was pretty good action, actually, you got to see the bbr launch the missile and everything.
Stealth fighter raping a miner, from cockpit view - or the enemies' viewpoint, so all you see is missiles streaking out of nowhere and then a ship appearing, raping, and disappearing.
IC int launching, then doing a u-turn and rotating to boost between that gap between the hanger and the base, in order to kill something on the other side.

The video juckto posted is nice but I'm with Bacon when it comes to putting the original Allegiance intro video on the main page. The whole point is to show more than just gameplay footage, but some of the story and setting behind Allegiance, and no in-game trailer can do that.
I mean, if we're going to put the original intro video back in the game, then sure, there'd be no need to keep it up on the main page. But I doubt that will happen any-time soon, and until it does, I think putting the original intro in a central position on the page is a great idea. Adding juckto's trailer or another gameplay video as a third video, though, I think would be pretty alright -- and there seems to be enough room under the video for a third link (though it won't look quite as neat and tidy as it does now).
Honestly, though, I for one think the videos are great exactly the way they're set up now on Bacon's page.

The "story" behind Allegiance is quite possibly the weakest part of the whole game. It's incredibly superficial and half-baked, and the quality of the asteroid movie, quite frankly, is an embarassment. The backstory of Allegiance contributes absolutely nil to my enjoyment of the game. There's no call to bait-and-switch people, thinking they're getting an immersive universe thingy when in reality the game is no more than two teams bashing the crap out of each other (repeatedly).girlyboy wrote:QUOTE (girlyboy @ Dec 15 2009, 06:55 AM) The whole point is to show more than just gameplay footage, but some of the story and setting behind Allegiance, and no in-game trailer can do that.
