I'm sorry but you really can't fly Allegiance with just the keyboard. It's impossible to aim well enough. You either need to learn to fly with the mouse, or get a joystick. I recommend moving the sidethrusters to WASD and seeking good places for things like [forward thrust], [back thrust], [boost] and so forth around it.

Then again, I fly with a joystick so some mouse pilots can no doubt give you more help with setting up your controls.
I read the Cadet pre-reading, I know it's generally considered a bad idea, but it works for me.

The mouse doesn't respond fast enough to my thoughts. I cant use it because I'll be slow. At least see me in action before saying it won't work. Maybe it will work for me?

Fixed your spelling error on recommend by the way, just a habit of mine.

When you are going head on with an enemy pilot, shoot him, and when he lands his first shot on you, sidethrust in a different direction, and then after the next stream of bullets starts hitting you, change again. Of course it is more complicated than that in practice but that is pretty much the basics.

The practice is always a great idea. As for the numbers, when you are really good, you will only die of boredom. Enough practice and caffeine will enable you to kill 50 of more before you just quit.

The one thing I found that training mission to be good for was dumbfire training. It's a lot easier to hit those AI opponents with a dumbfire than it is your usual human opponent, so you can use that mission to learn what the ideal conditions are for using dumbs in a dogfight. I mean, anyone will tell you that dumbs are fired from the rear quarter when the opponent isn't maneuvering much, from a range of 3-600 meters, but it's better to get a direct feel for it.

No it won't work. The problem is, that you won't be able to smoothly leadshoot with your keyboard. Use your mouse. Reaction time isn't that important in Alleg. It's rather important to make as many of your bullets hit as possible by leadshooting.

I think you will get used to the mouse. I mean, I know it seems like complete BS and rude for everyone to be saying "You can't use the keyboard to fly!!" But, well... it's true. Sorry.

One you get in the game you will realize how much there is to do that does not involve dogfighting that helps your team win:
Watching miners, probing, nanning, following really great dogfighters around with a scout healing them, looking at the map and predicting where the next bomb run will come from, and be there dropping probes.

Realize early that it will take a long time to get truly good at dogfighting, and help your team in useful ways till you get the hang of the game, and you will be noticed early and much loved around here.
And make sure to avoid making angry posts the first time you get booted from a team when you get a higher rank. It happens. Just shrug it off and learn from it. It's nothing personal.

And while you are playing the dogfighting mission, check out this link: make sure to click all the links inside, they have animated instructions:

I'm wondering if he's made a breakthrough . . . . I'd love to see him fly like such.

I believe there should be a rock opera about a pianist who learns to adapt their virtuoso keyboarding skills to Allegiance. They sing songs about how no-one believed they could fly with the keyboard alone, and how they play the game just like they play the piano; and everyone else sings a chorus of disbelief as they get better and better. Different tunes could be metaphors for different roles played in the game, with gentle, slow music for probing, powerful, quick tunes for ints, etc. And then in the climax they rise to the leadership of one of the squads, and go up against SysX in the tournament; they lose, but barely, quit Allegiance forever to pursue a big musical gig in Japan, and are remembered forever as a hero when Mr. C. names a server after them. The end.

Lolz, well I do write music time to time. I've been writing this one piece I call Dream, and it's coming out pretty good, it's about half done, when it's finished it'll be 3-5 minutes long. I do write various minute pieces for enjoyment, but this idea of a Rock Opera intrigues me!
