Where to start?... My story like all stories begin with Battlestar Galactica. So I had just finished watching all the seasons and thought to myself that it would be so cool if there was a game with spaceships and such. After a couple of hours of porn I found a blog which listed all free mmo's available and in it I saw 'Allegiance: Space combat... something'. I thought, wow, that could be cool and clicked and downloaded and started playing it. I began with the tutorials first and then moved on to the online matches. Needless to say I pwnd... did i say pwn, I meant I was pwnd. So I thought, $#@! it, and gave up.

After a few months I felt guilty for not trying hard enough and decided to start again (no it was not because I had no other games to play and was bored out of my skull.. crap did I type that out loud). Anyway I started it up again a few weeks ago and I had a good game or two. Yes, I was useless and had more ejects than points, but that is not my point.

My point is that I fell in love with the game and I decided to stop being useless and do something about it, so long story short I have joined the 'Cadet-A' program and hope that in time I can be a valuable part to any team and you'll accept me into your family like a brother... *sob* maybe I should stop now before I really start crying. But srsly, this is an awesome game and... umm... well... thats all I had to say actually.

P.S. This took me a few days to come up with, so hope you like it. Also one more thing... in-game I have a number next to my name, eg Deadfoot(2), I am guessing its my rank but anyway to get rid of it?.

Finally i get to the main planet. (have had some graphical issues to fix, not to mention some conn troubles ecc ecc, so i spent the time reading up cadet 1 stuff, and academy, and storyline ^^

As for me, i'm new to alleg, found it out after looking for space games with an affinity to freelancer, or wing commander or elite... actually what made me decide to give it a go was the overly underlined fact that alleg's about teamplay. So i wanted to know what kind of teamwork that was, and i ended up reading more than i should, to keep my social life alive.

I'm a player of the original wing commander and any sequel i was able to get ahold of (not everything made it on the shelves here in Italy). Also i was an enthusiastic player of the Elite series (if you haven't recharged your H fuel tanks by letting yourself balance out your thrusters against the giant grav or speeding through a star's corona you haven't really seen anything about it) i do play some fps too, but frag for its sake ain't really all that fun unless you just want an adrenaline fix.

Still i was checking today and my piloting skills seem to be especially underdeveloped (bet you were able to save the miner in your nanite training mission... well i wasn't), still having trouble with the lousy precision through vectored flight... hopefully i won't suck as bad with a lil practice.

That said, i hope i'll be able to get along fine enough ( can't wait to stealth around in a scout in enemy territory).

Welcome to Allegiance. The game is not too tasking on your social live, as most games take around 40 mins and each game is a fresh start. There is a lot to learn, both about game mechanics as well as flying skill, however while you have your newbie status ( (number) next to your callsign), commanders won't expect or demand much from you. Do the training missions, then make a game on a newbie server to learn a bit how ships actually work. You should learn the basics about how to equip and fly ships before joining the real games, because it's difficult to teach those in the chaos that is a game of allegiance. For some more in depth training, you have the option to go trough cadet (CDT) or ask a friendly pilot to show you some more in depth tricks.. somebody with a squad flag is your best bet (@ next to their callsign).

Also the first thing you do, should be to get the custom keyboard layout that you'll find in the reading material.. it only works in real games though, not the training missions.

A worthy point to raise as most aren't aware that the training missions use their own keymapping to ensure the training scripts work. (ie the script says "hit the X key" but you've remapped your controls and they are no longer in sync). There is a work around though... mostly useful for the last mission or so: Go into the map control menu and hit "accept". This reads in your customized key map and re-applies it to the mission. Just be aware this *could* mess up the mission because of the aforementioned scripting depending on when you apply it and if the script continues to need certain keys pressed.

actually, i already remapped as soon as i was able to take those missions after the graphical mess, as freebeer was saying i had troubles because once i remapped keys were out of sync and i wasn't able to proceed cause i set space as the mouse switch key, thus removing it from the original function... mission asked to press space but... ah well ^^ as for the mechanics i am working on getting used to the various interfaces as we speak, so i won't be in a "real" game, for a while. as for cadet, i was thinking about joining in, but i'd hate not to be able to participate in a training session i could have programmed: i tend to have a weird timed schedule, that's why i was trying to get the most on my own, before i start bothering someone

Excellent. I also cut my teeth on Elite when I was tiny, and am a rabid fan of Wing Commander, especially the last one, Wing Commander Prophecy. If you never got that, you should look for it. It's still great.

But Allegiance is better. This game is what Ive been hoping for ever since Elite, and it's lost none of it's charm since 2000. Welcome aboard. Allegiance is worth the climging the learning curve mountain.

As for cadet - it is mostly forum based help, and advice from decent vets in the game.

it's always worth doing it, if you are able to check the forum a couple of times a week......

What I don't get is why when people illustrate Allegiance as having a steep learning curve they have skill on the y axis and time on the x axis when it should be the other way round.

Reminds me, I was playing versus on L4D a while back and there was a kid with a squeaky voice pwning all over...
After the finale another player asked him, "How old are you".
The squeaky voice replies "Seven..." (!)

The other player says "You are the most EPIC seven year old I have ever seen..."

Makes me think, how soon before we start seeing allegites who were born in the 21st century?
