And as of now, every AV worth its salt can detect and remove Conficker.

That's why I said:
Ever heard of the Conficker virus?
Are you nuts? I don't play Russian Roulette with my machine or my network.

As far as the packet thing,I may have phrased it wrong, but an installation package can get infected between the host offering the software, and the person downloading it.

/no,I didn't use the quote button :P

Only if it's re-hosted by a third party who happens to have a viral infection. And only then if you download it from the newly-infected third party source.

In the case of Alleg, the third party hosters are encouraged to check the MD5 hash of the install. Personally, I check the MD5 both once I've downloaded the installer from TE's server, then again when I've uploaded to my server. This methodology ensures not only that your exe hasn't been infected in transit, but also that you've not uploaded a borked (partial transfer) exe to your server.

Real men check once, then twice... then again just to make sure.

They've penetrated our code walls. They're stealing the Internet!

:P

I've never had any problems downloading anything with Firefox, or indeed any security-related problems that had anything to do with the browser. >_> My only long-standing complaint about Firefox is that it's always so bloodeh slow to load. >_< But all the pretty themes make up for it (RedShift FTW!) ^_^

Yeah. The Firefox proponents always mention 'speed'. On my box IE loads and displays the 'start page' 3x quicker than FF does. The only reason I use FF is that it execues Javascript faster than IE. (or at least it did. The site in question has now fixed up its JS).

I'm not a member of the 'browser wars'. Everyone should just be happy that it's not like Compuserve in the old days.

I've heard this philosophy should be applied to the use of condoms, also.

I'm sorry, the "I'm innocently bouncing up and down to get my tight jeans on because I'm so poor I can't afford ones that fit...oh,and I didn't know that camera was watching me,either." girl still has my attention.
