yay  finally convinced my dad to switch the Antivirus from AVG to Avast (wish I still had my admin privs on my comp :glare: )

from reading the Bitdefender and AVG cause "failure to connect to server" thread I am 99% positive that the problem I'm having is caused by AVG Free Edition 8.0

pre 8.0 versions seem to work fine but I recommend using a different program like Avast (must install without the optional firewall!) or NOD32 or any of the others suggested in this thread just not AVG 8.0

Ahh so that's why Avast didn't work for me either. The firewall component.

I much prefer AVG8.... is there anyway to allow Alleg server to work with it on Vista?

I am using vista ultimate and and avast. I also have avast installed on a machine right next to me running windows xp professional. Runs fine on xp and I get a failed to connect to the server with vista. The standard home free addition of avast does not come with a firewall. I also have the firewall shut off on all my windows machine because there is no need. I am behind a router with a firewall. I will try to uninstall avast tomorrow and ill post my results. I used to play and really miss this game I was never really good but the game is awesome. I hope I can get it fixed on my main gaming machine which runs vista wish me luck xD.

Reminder: NOD32 AV on Vista is known to work. NOD32 SS will not.

The standard home free edition of Avast DOES come with a firewall. Do a custom install and you have the option to uncheck it.

It is the firewall portion that is causing these issues. Get out a packet sniffer and watch. You'll the absence of packets when those AV firewalls are installed and magically watch them appear when the AV firewall is not installed.

Can we get a sticky on this issue if it doesn't already exist? We've had a known solution for . .well, at least since November when I posted about it with my new PC.
