Hey, I'm sonicoreos. I'm new here and I really like the game so far. The learning curve is steep but there are a lot of helpful people here.
Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to make myself useful in games and not an annoying dead weight ?
(In other words, how can I be and newbie not a n00b?)
I have read through the Cadet I manual and practiced on the newbie server. I was a little too late to enroll in Cadet I. (I could have but I wasn't sure if I would even like the game yet). Hopefully I can get in the next session.

Welcome, sonicoreos. ^_^ And thank you for reading the manual!
The best way to be useful when you don't have a lot of experience is to focus on flying scouts (except for those moments when you are defending one of your bases from immediate attack). Always (always - there are literally no exceptions) keep a nanite repair gun in cargo in your scout and be ready to mount it if a miner, constructor, or bomber needs repairs. Pay attention to the chat and the mini-map (turned on by pressing f7, as you likely know) to see if any utility or other ships need a nan around. Always have a Gatling gun with you too to destroy enemy EWS probes and the like, but don't try to engage in combat, instead focusing on repairing friendly ships when they are in danger. Otherwise, like refill said, focus on ensuring that every enemy and empty sector on the map has plenty of probes in it. When you are docked, look over all the sectors on the map (using the mini-map and f3 view) to see which need probes. When you fly off to probe, it may help to have a prox mine in cargo as well to help defend yourself (especially effective if you are being chased, run through an aleph, and drop the mines as soon as you're on the other side). Always kill enemy EWS probes when you come across them. Always, always pay attention to the team chat, especially command orders, but also what the other players are saying.
Ask questions when you have them, but sometimes if the action is heating up no-one will have time to answer. Don't take it personally and wait for times when the action slows down to ask again.
Your eagerness to learn is probably the best thing you can bring to this game as a new player, so thank you for that. ^_^

Hello all,
I, too, just joined and I'm eager to get started. I can't wait to play but I'm trying to read as much as possible. I believe that with how many hours i'm seeing logged by top players, I'm gonna need every edge to be a great player! I have strange hours right now so I haven't seen anyone on the newbie server
Can anyone tell me how to get a game going alone? I can't seem to check the option in the game settings to allow empty teams.
See you all out there.
