Welcome Newbie Players
There seems to be problem with Alleg's mail servers at the moment. The admins are looking into it as we speak. You're not alone in having had problems with the activation email. Please be patient... I (we) have no idea how long this might take to fix.

Granary Sergeant Baker - Special Bread Service (Wurf - 13th Oct 2011)
I suppose I'll stop by and say hello as well. I just picked up Allegiance yesterday and have been trying things out. I find my biggest problem right now (outside of the activation email thing, which was solved, and the network connection thing, which I managed to solve on my own (bloody router...)) is understanding what to do. As a noob, should I try to scout around and not get killed? I've been trying that, but often times it's very hard to sneak into an enemy sector and stay hidden. I have some ideas in that regard, but I won't share those here of course, lest I play one of you anytime soon.
Other tasks which I assume I Could be decent at include nanning for bombers and escorting miners. But that last one seems a stretch, since my kill ratio right now is, um, in need of work. I honestly think I could do a decent job just hiding and providing intel. Does this sound resonsable? And if so, what are the best methods for hiding? I understand we want to minimize signature, and I know how to do that, but other than that, are there any tricks in maneuevering or placement that can be helpful? What do you, as veterans and commanders, want? Actually, PMs answering these questions would be great.
While I wait, I will go through the academy texts again, though I spent my activation time reading them already.
Thanks!

Here are some tips: your sig goes down if you don't shoot, don't fire thrusters, don't have missiles loaded, and don't have shields loaded. Also it's impossible for a ship/probe/base to see through an asteroid.

Start nanning the miners as well as the bombers!

1) Already told you the basics on how sig works, which you've apparently already read.
2) Face your target... always. You can't see out your ass.
3) Try to look at the red doors of the Garrison if you're going to be 'providing intel.' It's only really applicable in really large games (say, 20 on 20 or 25 on 25) and at later points in the game when all the miners are dead and cons are planted, to see a con rush coming before it rips to a forward sector or a new miner come out to pick up home regen. Otherwise, you're more useful dropping probes (NOT on the red door, I've been seeing a lot of that lately), nanning bombers/miners/constructors/interceptors, or even flying with a pack of ints trying to hit things.

Don't find fault, find a remedy; anybody can complain.

Academy is a good start. Then you'll want to check out Cadet I and Cadet II.
In the mean time, you'll want to figure out/configure your controls and make sure you have your thrusters mapped and you get comfortable using them. The game takes a long time to learn as the variables are many and so are the tactics. So yes, learning to scout the map, dropping probes in intelligent places, nanning bombers, etc. are all good things to start with. Most of all, read the chat to get information on what's going on.
Also, get Teamspeak and ask questions there. It's so much easier for someone to answer on TS than it is in our limited chat windows (plus it's hard to reply when you're busy).

heya, I played in 2000 when it first came out for about a year. My friend told me people are still playing so I downloaded and bought new joystick and trying to learn again. Too bad when you have the newbie next to your name sometimes your not given a chance to join. Perhaps I will keep trying to join a game and get more experience. I remember very little right now, but I did enjoy playing and was in top 100 during my year of pay for play at the time I left. Glad to be back but how long depends on whose leader and can give a poor newbie a chance.
