Duck,
If you only have a 4x slot, the 8x card will scale down. But if you have a 3.06 HT processor I doubt you have a 4x slot. You may simply have an 8x slot with a 4x card in it.

The 3850 is the best AGP card on the market, and it uses about the same power as an x800 card from 2 years ago which is incredible given the performance increase.

Currently the ATI 4850 for $175-200 absolutely stomps all of the Nvidia cards at that price range. It SMOKES the 8800 GT in every test I've seen. It is comparable to the 9800GTX in most tests and is better than the 9800GTX in a lot of them. Considering the 4850 is $100 less then the 9800GTX and the 4850 is single slot, runs cooler, uses less power, and performs better so there is no question about which card to buy at that price range if you have a PCI-E slot and want a new card.

Nak is absolutely right. Here is a qualifier though Ducky, make sure if you buy the 3850 that you buy the AGP version. As silly as it sounds, they do make both PCI-E and AGP versions of the card. The AGP one usually carries a price hike versus the PCI-E so if your not paying attention and go for the cheapest card you may get the wrong one by accident.

I personally know a friend who runs a 3850 in an AGP4X slot. It works beautifully, albeit slower due to his old processor (P4 2.8Ghz PressHot).

Edit: No problems when I have the brains to use the right drivers. Runs Alleg beautifully.
