Having earlier today witnessed a rather shameful stack-fest by one Ascalon_Rift (aka IronSeed), complete with commentary on how HELO doesn't mean anything when the eithty-something side finally triumphed over the twenty something side.
(You don't even want to know more specifics about the game.)
I was happy in my delusion that such sillyness wouldn't count, since the HELO imbalance has to mean that game doesn't count. Now I'm a bit shocked to learn that no such effect is active, and any win counts. Bloody ****! What sense does this make? /huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="huh.gif" />
Wait a minute... so HELO imbalance dosen't actually count?

I think it just gives less points. They removed the "games not counting" after the ELO system evolved into HELO.Adept wrote:QUOTE (Adept @ Dec 5 2007, 10:45 AM) Having earlier today witnessed a rather shameful stack-fest by one Ascalon_Rift (aka IronSeed), complete with commentary on how HELO doesn't mean anything when the eithty-something side finally triumphed over the twenty something side.

Thanks for the link.
Ultimately you win (stack or not) you get points. You lose (stack or not) you lose points.
Argh!
This causes a problem. I like to fly for the underdog, but if the situation is bad enough, that just makes me fodder for the stacker. Damn... /doh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="doh.gif" />

....and why do you care about your or the stackers rank?Adept wrote:QUOTE (Adept @ Dec 5 2007, 11:18 AM) Thanks for the link.

We all know its pointless and proves nothing. This is just one of the reasons why.

Are we at the stage where autobalance is always on?
Ignore your rank, just play. People will recognize your skill regardless of your rank, and if they don't, that is good because you can whore them unsuspectingly.
besides, a lower HELO is good because it allows you to join whichever side you want /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Yeah, but games like the one I saw today are not fun.takingarms1 wrote:QUOTE (takingarms1 @ Dec 5 2007, 06:48 PM) Are we at the stage where autobalance is always on?

IronSeed's side had anly intermediate level gamers, King Arthur's side had all novices, including two newbies. All the talk about how the points don't mean anything withstanding, there's pretty much only one way that game will end.
No real challenge for the stacker side, and much frustration to the people new to the game. This is not good

??? Except there is no actual effect in play that would give that effect, is there?apathos wrote:QUOTE (apathos @ Dec 5 2007, 06:28 PM) To continue the never ending debate...as time goes on, those who stack will gain enough HELO that they can no longer join the stack side (or it will at least force them to split up more).
In the end, it all balances out, and we achieve HELO nirvana. May The Force be with you.
If some sort of HELO balancing was happening, then this would be true, but as it stands now... nothing.
Am I missing something?

Theoretically if autobalance is on, and imbal is off, then stackers can't stack too much, since their ELO gets way high and they are either forced to join the non-stacked side or sit.
If autobalance is not on, then all of this is completely irrelevant, and HELO is meaningless.

I guess it's hardly ever on then, or I play at the wrong times. In the specific example Mr. stacker was game owner, so obviously it wasn't on.takingarms1 wrote:QUOTE (takingarms1 @ Dec 5 2007, 08:55 PM) Theoretically if autobalance is on, and imbal is off, then stackers can't stack too much, since their ELO gets way high and they are either forced to join the non-stacked side or sit.

Anyway, thanks for the answers! Learning a little every day still.
