Voob = not quite noob, not quite vet. The middle ground where you don't really want to insult by saying noob/newb, but you don't want to praise by saying vet. Past time in the community has no bearing on voob status.

TB
From the way it's used, it sounds like a minor slur really. It's definitely not a compliment.

But don't worry. I'm learning & relearning in leaps and bounds, and having loads of fun doing it.

Now if I would just stick to flying ints and fighters I'd really be a voob. I could be useful defending bases, miners and cons (and supporting attacks) and racking up huge numbers of kills, but then I wouldn't really be learning the game. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I have heard a gazillion definitions of it. here is what I have been able to gleen from all of them.

Newb = Quite literally a new pilot, give him a little room, and teach him.

Noob = Obnoxious new guy that has yet to learn that this community is mostly adults that are over 20. and we do not take @#(! talk readily.

Voob = a pilot that is somewhere in the middle, that still acts like a twit, flies like he does not know anything, acts like an ass, and has no number.

Vet = An established player that has been around a while, regardlesss of his elo status.

Yeah, but there's still the newb vs. noob thing there /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Incidentally I'd like to know how large a proportion of Allegiance players are squadded. One sees a fair number of people with the @ in the pickup games and zone games, but I haven't actually managed to estimate the proportion. I guess it could be worked out from the leaderboard (active in the last week) and squad rosters...

Well my definition stemmed from the context. If they are calling you a voob and refering to you as a returning vet it fits.

Voob is a blending of two words, newbie and veteran, so any blending of the two definitions will fit. So the definition of a voob is any blending of the definitions of newbie and veteran.

As for the fig stuff, those are just my habits. If you know them, great, if you have something better, awesome. But just incase someone gets some use of it.

As for knowledge. I'm still learning as well, you never stop in this game. Otherwise most of us would have moved on.

This has been my understanding also, hence I was a bit unhappy to be called a voob. I can't claim to be a vet, but I have some skill and I hope I'm not obnoxious. From the weekend on I'll be a cadet, so that will propably clear things up /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

By the way, what is elo status?

It was nice to read it, and indeed I had forgotten about vector lock! I've been approximating it's use with the directional thrust, but binding vector lock somewhere on my stick should be useful.

/edit oh, and I hadn't actually been called a voob before this, so I was quite surprised by it.

That's the all mighty points / level system that the whores pursue. It controls how your rank number is adjusted, and your standing on the leader board.

Everyone says they ignore it, and then mercilessly stack to increase it.

There is more on the wiki about it. There should be something in the wiki about it, but I couldn't find it in the 5 seconds I looked... Maybe it's on the academy. Not readily available there either... /unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Anyway, lots of discussions about it in the forums for sure!! /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />
