I understand but my point is that if you scroll up newbies arent the ones not listening... You shouldnt get those types of responses to an in game suggestion that only seeks to tame the relationship between newbs and angry comms. like jackto being the well respected journalist that he is talking about "poorly constructed ranting" lol and so far as "big code change" juck its obvious you dont know anything about code man it would go something like this on the payday tick:

Income (object oFaction)
{
int iPlayerIncome;
int iPercIncrease;
object oPlayer = GetFirstPlayerInFaction();
while (oPlayer == OBJECT_VALID)
{
iPlayerIncome = GetIncome();
iPercIncrease = iPlayerIncome;
iPlayerIncome = (iPlayerIncome + (iPlayerIncome%));
oPlayer = GetNextPlayerInFaction();
}
}

and im sure for you juck... that IS a big code change.

Zamargo,

There are three types of newbiesThose who listen and show a willingness to learn. Almost all vets are extremely patient with newbies.Those who don't listen and/or show no willingness to learn. These receive a mixed response that varies from player to player. Those who stomp their feet and insist that *they* are right, despite having precious little in-game experience. These players are ignored (at best), or actively scored and made fun of. In addition, these players are almost always wrong.It seems that you have the potential to be the first kind of newbie, but you are on the fast-track to becoming the third type with a thread hijack, stubbornness and some old-fashioned flaming. As Training ZL, it is my job to see to the health and welfare of all of my newbies, so please, take my advice.

Every single one of your suggestions/observations is wrong, almost without exception. They either do not reflect the reality of the game, and the reality of the community. The only marginal exception is sometimes people can't answer questions in the middle of a game, because they are too busy trying to win. The best thing you can do in these situations is pick a pilot who seems like they know what they are doing, and do everything they do (unless they ask you to go away because they are sneaking around). In these situations, teamspeak is a great tool, because everyone LOVES answering questions when a new people seems interested in learning.

Secondly, I see that you have a few games under your belt. I don't know where you've been playing them, but it would be a very very good idea to play most of your games on the vet server (which is the biggest, non-newbie server). As Training ZL, I've spent a lot of time flying with newbies, and I've found that the most virulent anti-newbie behavior usually comes from people who are still newbies themselves. You'll find most of the vets on the main server are very patient with newbies who try to learn the game, or at the very least keep to themselves. Vets usually only flame the newbies who insist on doing things their way (instead of learning how the game is actually played).

Thirdly, just drop this discussion while you are still ahead. It would be great if you apologized and promised to spend more time learning the game, but you will still come out ahead if you just never post in this thread again. This is probably my most important piece of advice. There is a long list of players who managed to totally trash their reputations by acting like pompous jackasses in the forums. If you hang around long enough, you'll learn who those people are. Please, for the love of God, don't join that list of players. I die a little bit every time someone manages to alienate him/herself by being a windbag.

Of course, realize that I'm writing this, not because I want to flame you or make fun of you, but because I care about the community. I hate to see players with potential trash any chance they have of enjoying the game. I've spent a good 25 minutes forming my thoughts, writing this letter, rereading for cohesiveness, and catching some of my stupid typos. Please, don't let me work in vain.

Your posts are a struggle to read, and any effort to point this out to you is met with "No you're an idiot!"

Welcome to, as Clay Pigeon put it, 'Category Three'.

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.

Joe Einstein?

That aside, just let things be. I almost ruined my reputation within a week of being on the forums because I thought I knew enough of the game to make suggestions, and I wouldn't see that I was wrong.

There's better examples out there than me, that have totally ruined their reputation with no chance of salvation, but I wanted to let you know how easy it is to make a considerable dent in it.

((of course we were IC supyard with attack carriers camping all the enemy bases... but still))
HEEHEHEHEHEHEHHE, I totally remember that. I kept winning because of my superior skills.

Also, I have no idea WTF you all are talking about when you say FF used to be "the norm" in Alleg. FF being OFF has always been "the norm." I've played maybe 20 games in my Allegiance career w/ FF on... either that or I am completely unobservant.

Zamargo... Welcome to my ignore list.
You hit too many of my buttons too quicky.

(1)As a programmer you should be well aware of the importance of proper capitalization, punctuation, and, most of all, line returns.
(2)A real coder can program in solder would have checked out the alleg svn before revealing how easy a change would be. I suspect even jucto knew that Allegiance's code is a pain to work with.
(3)As a game develo... I'm not even going to humor you on that one. That game of craps you made in high school CS doesn't count. Welcome to the internet... Pics or GTFO, etc.
(4)No one wants to read a poorly composed post that makes you sound like Joe Genius.

FYI your #3 on my list... along with Yanlin and mobyfafa.

Playing devil's advocate, if you will, perhaps there is some logic in having team chat enabled only for the commander.

But I can't really do much to reconcile that logic. Face it, the commander has to be in about five places at once, and it's a really stressful job. Unless there are ubercommanders that can keep up with what's going on in every sector, all chat for all is the way to go.

In large games it's possible to divy up the commander responsibilities between people (i.e. one watches miners only, one places drones, one buys stuff, one orders team) but as far as I know it's a waste of experienced players in the field. Instead, the commander does what he's supposed to do, and experienced players make calls as to what needs to be done, such as probing, getting a bomb run going.

The idea that friendly fire hurts the damager is a little out-of-place for alleg, simply because the best thing about having FF on is needing to watch out for others' stuff. If you fly through someone's minefiled, do they die for it? Yeah, it's actually fairly hard to see if FF is on or not unless you deliberately shoot at your own team mates, which is bad practice.
